From Synth Rock Anthem to Tender Acoustic Ballad – The Story Behind Faint Halos’ Latest Single “Something To Lose”

by Leslie Sherman April 23, 2024 8:52 am Tagged With: 2024, indie rock, Pop, Rock, singer, songwriter, United States

“Something To Lose” is the latest single from Faint Halos, led by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul Hashemi.

Hashemi’s decision to re-imagine the song with a much more intimate approach adds a fresh perspective, revealing a tender, folk like quality that enriches the emotional resonance. The song offers a captivating exploration of introspection and love.

“Something to Lose” blends old-school indie rock vibes with modern sensibilities, incorporating unconventional instruments like a repurposed sofa and accordion. Hashemi’s innovative approach breathes new life into the indie rock scene, offering a departure from the norm.

Capturing the bittersweet essence of a doomed summer romance, there is a gradual realisation of its inevitable demise, with imagery and storytelling that evokes a poignant sense of loss and introspection.

It’s natural to look back and wonder – did we ever really have a chance? With a brooding baritone, stellar harmonies, acoustic guitars, an accordion, and a sofa to slap for a kick drum, singer/songwriter Paul Hashemi lays out the bitterness you can feel when things don’t resolve: “I’m sorry for the way I disappeared from you / I’m sorry that you thought I was still here with you / I’m sorry that I never really knew the truth / Wouldn’t be the truth if I knew”.

Originally conceived with a captivating computer-sequenced synthesizer part and the haunting phrase “As if we had something to lose…”, the song evolved into a synth-based rock anthem that pulsated with emotional intensity.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered in Hashemi’s home studio in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, “Something To Lose” features emotive vocals and intricate instrumentation, including acoustic guitars and subtle percussion.

The addition of vocal harmonies by Hashemi’s daughter, Cate, adds a bright, melodic layer to the song.

Hashemi’s musical journey, influenced by classical training and his experiences in the 1990’s music scene, reflects his diverse talents as a musician and producer. Despite a hiatus to focus on his career and family, he rediscovered his passion for music during the pandemic, leading to the formation of Faint Halos and a brand new chapter in his career.

“Something to Lose” promises to resonate with audiences seeking sincerity and creativity in new music. Look out for Faint Halos’ new album release “I can see a million lights” later this spring.
