A Slow Burn with Swagger – Lil’ Red & The Rooster Deal the Blues on “Stack ‘Em Up Baby”

With their new single “Stack ‘Em Up Baby,” Lil’ Red & The Rooster effortlessly breathe new life into the blues with a sound that is fresh and timeless.

From the intro, the listener is immersed in a richly textured, slow-burning groove that balances vintage elegance with a contemporary edge.

It’s a sultry, piano-laced slow-dance through a smoky late-night scene, evoking the spirit of classic blues while wearing a distinctly modern cloak.

Jen “Lil’ Red” Milligan’s vocals are the heart of the track – confident and full of character. Her vocals strike the perfect balance between playful mischief and soulful depth, teasing listeners with lyrics that call out bluffs and bravado with a wink and a knowing smile. Her voice floats smoothly over the instrumental, conveying both warmth and attitude and inviting you to lean in and savor every word.

Pascal Fouquet’s guitar adds a tasteful layer of nuance, never overpowering but always present, his subtle blues riffs threading through the piano driven foundation like an elegant shadow. His playing reflects decades of experience, blending classical influences with a deep reverence for the blues masters like B.B. King and Kenny Burrell. Pascal is a guitarist who knows how to say more with less — each and every note is deliberate, every bend and slide full of feeling.

But the jewel in the crown of this track is undoubtedly the contribution of Grammy nominated pianist Bobby Floyd, whose credits include legends like Ray Charles and Count Basie. His piano work adds a refined richness and authenticity to the song, perfectly complementing the duo’s retro-modern vibe.

This track certainly conjures up images of a smoky jazz club in the ‘60s — think Rickie Lee Jones singing a Tom Waits song with the soulful groove of Ray Charles and the smooth jazz guitar of Kenny Burrell stirring through the mix. It’s filled with character, making it impossible not to be drawn in.

As the lead single from their forthcoming album “7″, “Stack ‘Em Up Baby” promises to be a journey through themes of freedom, and rising from adversity all wrapped up in a rich palette of gospel, blues, retro soul and pop jazz. For fans of Lil’ Red & The Rooster, this track will feel like a natural progression of their signature “retro-modern” blues style which they have honed and perfected over fifteen years of musical collaboration and performance.

And in an era where blues music often risks becoming a mere homage, Lil’ Red & The Rooster truly stand out as authentic torchbearers, bringing a joyful energy to the genre.

“Stack ‘Em Up Baby” is a must listen for anyone who loves the blues with a fresh twist, a celebration of groove, storytelling and soul bursting with personality!
