Ahmet Kalabay is a composer/guitarist living in Istanbul/Turkey.

His debut album “Think About That” was recorded live in Warsaw/Poland with Svante Bosse(trumpet), Eljah Jeremias (trombone), Sylwester Gustaw (bass), Herbert Jaromir (drums). Will be available on stores in 5th Aug 2016.

In this interview, we speak with Ahmet about his influences, what led him into music, and his newest project.

Let’s dive a little deeper into you, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

I’ve always listened different styles of music. I’m not only an indie music fan but also love to listen stoner rock or classical music. But when I take my instrument in my hands, I leave my fingers free and my genre of music is created automatically. I guess everything in life influences the music style of a musician. Books, movies, people around you, other music etc. This style is the story that tells my life.

What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?

I always interested in meeting with new musicians and play with them. When I’ve met with the guys playing in my band, I’ve introduced my songs and they were very good to understand and accompany what I try to do. We’ve recorded them in 2 days. Never thought it was going to be pushed public. But it’s sounded like an album more than a jam session. Listeners and friends also encouraged me to release it in digital stores.

Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?

I’m closing my eyes, and waiting nature to influence my creativity. It’s like meditation and relaxing. I try to clear my mind and melodies come through. By this way my tastes always change, I try to tell new feelings and stories with my music.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

I’ve tried to discover a new style of music. I’m a big fan of brass sound and tried to blend them with some indie-based sound.

What was the last song you listened to?

I’ve listened “Break Into Your Heart” from Iggy Pop

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

I’m a CD collector as a nineties kid. But my fans prefer to listen my music from spotify.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

I prefer Spotify. Since I’ve been using spotify, I’ve discovered many new artists by using playlists and related artists feature. Weekly discovers are incredible and wisely listed.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?

I know that it’s very hard for new musicians to connect with new fans today. I was lucky that my friends and social network liked my album and started to share with other friends. I’ve also sent my songs to global radios and they were accepted.

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more music?

I prefer my Facebook fan page for messaging with people. And Spotify is best way to stay connected with my new music. I’ll be sharing more music this year.
