Alex Thomen’s “Where Did They Go Wrong?” – A Sharp and Satirical Take on Life’s Ironies

by Leslie Sherman September 16, 2025 11:08 am Tagged With: 2025, classical, indie, new music, New Single, Pop, singer, songwriter

Alex Thomen’s latest single “Where Did They Go Wrong?“ is a biting and insightful exploration of irony, personal growth and the unexpected paths people take in life.

With sharp observational storytelling, Thomen uses this track to examine three culturally resonant narratives – a boy who once struggled with self-image now proclaims himself as an “alpha male”, an ambitious young woman falls into a multi level marketing scheme and a med student shifts his focus from traditional medicine to alternative therapies. While the characters are fictional , their stories reflect real social phenomena that are especially prevalent in today’s internet – and the social media driven world.

Thomen’s storytelling is as meticulous as it is relatable. With witty lyrics, blending satire and social commentary, he highlights the humor and irony in human behaviour without any judgment. He captures the subtle layers of identity, ambition and societal pressures to create a song that is entertaining as well as thought provoking.

Drums were tracked by longtime collaborator Aaron Walters at Electric Wilburland in New York, while the piano was recorded at Colorado Sound Studios in Denver. Session guitarist Ryan Casey contributed the guitars from his Nashville home studio, and Tim Dolquist laid down the bass from Thomen’s own studio.

All of the vocals were performed by Thomen, tying together the diverse elements. And despite being recorded across multiple locations and sessions, the collaboration of world class musicians here gives the song a unified sound.

The music video was directed by Chase Bartholomew. It serves as a modern stand-in for live performance, bringing Thomen’s characters to life visually. Subtle facial expressions and nuanced performances highlight the song’s ironic undertones.

In Thomen’s own words, “The music video became my stand-in for a live performance, capturing the irony that comes through in subtle facial expressions.”

Alex Thomen has built a career as a multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer with a keen ear for both classical composition and contemporary storytelling.

With roots in woodwind performance and extensive experience in recording and production, his work consistently reflects a deep understanding of both musical craft and the cultural moments he seeks to capture. “Where Did They Go Wrong?” continues this tradition, highlighting the way Thomen can combine sharp lyrical insight with top-tier production.

In a cultural landscape saturated with social media, viral trends, and online grifting schemes, Thomen’s latest single feels especially timely. The video offers a humorous yet reflective lens on human behavior. With clever songwriting, and meticulous production, “Where Did They Go Wrong?” shows Thomen as a keen observer of contemporary life and a masterful storyteller through music.
