Bad Dreams of Regenerates

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman June 18, 2013 10:25 am Tagged With: dance, Electronic, Experimental, Hip Hop, rap

Regenerates have arrived with one of the freshest albums [classified under Hip Hop] I have had the opportunity to listen to in quite a while.

Bad Dreams is a combination of elements from urban music as well as experimental pop, electronic, and dance.

This trio from Mobile, Alabama is determined to make their mark with a unique blend of styles as epic as Frank Ocean but durrty like Outkast… similar to Scarface over a Kanye beat.

I haven’t heard anything quite like this before.

From the opening Don’t Fall Asleep! all the way to Good Morning/Goodnight, Bad Dreams is packed full of aural stimulation, an engaging range of vocals, and a production style unmatched by few.

These guys are the arena rock of experimental hip hop.

Regenerates isn’t new to the game. In fact, Kid X had this to say about their name:

I think every artist has had a project that was terrible from the get go. For us, it was our original project called “Rickshaw McPhearson”. If the name didn’t give it away enough, it was horrible. We never practiced, we wrote songs in about 5 minutes, and we performed to crowds of about 10 people at house parties. All of us knew our potential at that point was much greater than the effort we were putting forth. So, in January of 2012, we decided we would start from scratch. We changed our vision, we changed our goals, and we decided to make it our main focus. In essence, we were regenerated. Hence the name, “Regenerates”.

If you missed our interview with these guys, go read it.

Bad Dreams is now on my new favorite albums list and Regenerates have managed to put themselves on my indie music radar.

Go grab the album then connect with the group on their website or Facebook.
