Interview with Beachwood Coyotes – Face to Face

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman June 5, 2017 12:06 pm Tagged With: Alternative, indie pop, Los Angeles, Rock, United States

Beachwood Coyotes

After an acid trip that nearly left lead singer Jason decapitated, some really great music found inspiration and manifested itself into SoCal rockers Beachwood Coyotes.

In this interview spotlight, we chat with Jason about the newest project, influences, and more.

For the full story about that trip I mentioned earlier, head over here.

Full Q&A along with links and a stream of Face to Face below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

We’re from Southern California and since this is always a tough question to answer, I’ll keep it short: we make abrasive pop music.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

I was always around music growing up – various family friends playing guitar around me, parents blasting Clash records and Billy Joel songs. I grew up in a very musical household but with parents that didn’t play any instruments, they just embraced the love of music. Plain and simple: Music keeps me alive, that’s my motivation.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

Our new music is a lot more…fun. We set out to record songs that best captured our energy live while still maintaining our progress as songwriters. I feel that we’ve accomplished that with the new batch of songs.

Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

Technology has definitely helped us reach more people…which is great. But I also think that there are way more bands/musicians than there were prior to social media…which makes it difficult to stand out. It’s just another obstacle but that pushes us to work harder

Anything else before we sign off?

We love performing live more than anything, we love pushing ourselves towards a unique performance – come to a show and you’ll see that immediately
