Interview with Between The Rain

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman July 26, 2017 11:57 am Tagged With: alternative rock, hard rock, New York City, United States

Between the Rain

In this interview feature, we chat with Between The Rain about influences, the digital music world, their latest project and more.

Full Q&A along with links and streams below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

We all met and formed in New York City. We aim to make a modern form of alternative rock — one steeped in traditional hard rock, but darker, and pointier.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

Our similar influences, as well as a desire to play with a “core” group of musicians has certainly helped lead us to where we are. Our motivation? The songs wouldn’t be so rewarding if they didn’t make us all excited to play them. Our knowledge of each others’ tendencies, both musically and personally, are reflected in the music. In turn, the live shows have become more exciting, and our audiences have become wider. We have no desire to stop now.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

The influences are more varied from song to song, there’s really no theme to it. Each idea tends to branch out in it’s own direction. It’s almost like every song was a different animal, and we’d have to feed it accordingly. The only thing we set out to accomplish was make enjoyable music. We hope the songs do for others what they do for us.

Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?

I suppose the challenge is the way anyone can pick up an instrument and make themselves an online presence. It can make it difficult for those with more riding on the music they create. But that just challenges us to make better music anyway, so it’s a trade-off. Technology helps us every time we’re in the studio. We aim to do digital and analog recordings but when it comes to digital, you can certainly skip a few steps sometimes.

Where can we follow you online and hear more music?

You can find our music on Spotify. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook.

Anything else before we sign off?

You can usually catch us in New York City but we’ll be making our way down the East Coast soon. Be sure to check in for show dates!
