Blade of Grass – Psychedelic Rock from Los Angeles

Blades of Grass

In the era of instant notifications, streaming music services, and shorter attention spans, it becomes even more difficult for indie musicians to stand out; let alone hold the attention of listeners for the length of a radio single…which isn’t that long anymore.

When Blade of Grass popped into my inbox, I was immediately reminded of the power of the single. Their new EP, She Was, consists of a minimal 2 tracks but this creative collective managed to pack a lot of punch into those 8 minutes.

Based in Los Angeles, this psychedelic rock duo is powered by the talents of Josh James and Mike Hurst which make up the songwriting core of the band.

She Was is a story of a girl encountered by some curious visitors who become responsible for her nonlinear transformation. The song is driven by a catchy bass line, sweet guitar tones, and this eerily satisfying synth that could easily pass as communication from intergalactic beings.

Who You Gonna Run To is a more tropical, upbeat, acoustic guitar driven song asking some important questions to the female subject portrayed in the story.

I love the lyrics in this one. While pondering topics such as – “why does she run?” and “what happens to the soul when love is lost?” – the lead vocals take a playful tone while singing lines such as,

With only 2 songs, I can’t wait to hear more from Blade of Grass. These guys have my attention.
