Blonde & Grey’s New Album “Drifting through the Universe” – A Nostalgic Journey into 60’s Folk and 90’s Alt Rock

by Leslie Sherman November 21, 2024 7:10 am Tagged With: 2024, Folk, indie, new album, Pop, Rock, singer, songwriter, United States

Blonde & Grey’s latest album Drifting Through The Universe, feels like a celestial journey that starts in the heart and drifts outward to the stars.

With their unique blend of folk, classic rock, and introspective storytelling, this Connecticut-based duo deliver an 11 track collection that is as grounded in human experience as it is lofty in its aspirations.

The opening track, “All The Time,” is a perfect gateway into the album’s world with its bright, jangly guitars and Neil Friend’s warm, wistful vocals setting the tone for a record that is joyfully energetic as well as filled with moments of reflection:

The song’s lyrics reflect on the fleeting nature of time, a recurring theme that gives the album its emotional weight.

On “According to No Plan,” Friend’s decades-old lyrics find new resonance. Friend’s vocals carry the wear of years spent both away from, and immersed in, music. The interplay between Friend’s steady guitar and Kathy Olsen’s ethereal flute creates a dynamic that is both earthly and otherworldly, perfectly capturing the song’s existential musings.

About the song, Friend says:

“The music and a good bit of the lyrics for this song sat around for the better part of 50 years.  While fiddling with it not too long ago I came up with the new lyrics “Drifting Through the Universe According to No Plan” which became the chorus.

Whenever I get thinking a bunch about life and the mystery of before and after, I often think in terms of the universe and its vastness, and we are just drifting through it – swirling away!“

Kathy Olsen shines on the next track ,“How Many States,” with her lead vocals adding a smoky richness to this bluesy, evocative song.

The flute is a signature of Blonde & Grey’s sound, and works not just as an accompaniment but is a character in itself, with a presence throughout the album that is both elegant and playful.

The duo’s chemistry is on full display with “By My Side,” a track that juxtaposes crunchy guitars and 12-string shimmer with Olsen’s melodic flute lines. The song feels like a cross-generational conversation between 1960s rock and 1990s alt-rock, a hallmark of the duo’s ability to draw from their diverse influences while creating something wholly their own.

One of the album’s standout moments comes with “Let’s Jangle,” a lighthearted nod to the jangly guitar-pop of the Byrds and Tom Petty. It’s a joyful, infectious tune that showcases Blonde & Grey’s knack for creating songs that feel timeless yet fresh.

Song “Ringing for You” is also upbeat, light hearted and fun:

“Another updated old time silly pop song.  I was either 17 or 18 when I wrote this one.  Had just started college and two friends of mine – who were girls and just friends – were in their last year of high school.  Many days when they got home from school, I would place a quick call to confirm where they were hanging out and then I’d join them for some happy time herb let’s say.

One day I called and got no answer. After a while of this, I suppose that I then came up with the opening line: “I’ve been calling every 15 minutes…”  The song was finished soon after and I’ve tinkered with it over the decades though almost all of the lyrics are original.  Kathy’s flute makes it feel kind of timeless to me.”

Friend’s skill to bring lyrics written and inspired by his youth, with more recent compositions, speaks to the way past and present co-exist in a timeless manner. As the album unfolds, Drifting Through The Universe reveals itself as more of a reflection on the journey of life itself.

Blonde & Grey have carved out a unique space in today’s music landscape.

The dynamic duo of Kathy Olsen and Neil Friend, they bring timeless folk rock together with a contemporary flair. Based in Danbury, Connecticut, their music bridges decades and takes inspiration from the optimism of the 60’s, the introspection of the 70’s, and the tuneful energy of the 80’s and 90’s rock.

Kathy’s flute and rich harmonies perfectly complement Neil’s evocative songwriting and skillful guitar work. Their songs are just as likely to appeal to fans of Fleetwood Mac and the Moody Blues as they are to listeners discovering folk-rock for the first time.

For anyone looking for music that’s immersive and unapologetically authentic, Drifting Through The Universe is a journey worth taking!
