Bonnaroo Day 1 with Jedi Zanzibar

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman June 7, 2012 4:00 pm Tagged With: Bonnaroo

Middle Tennessee Music flag waving at Bonnaroo

As I walk from the far reaches of the alternate reality that is known as the Bonnaroo campgrounds, I begin to smell the smells of the festival: sweat, beer, deep fried foods… and people.

About halfway to centeroo I see a golf cart that has bottomed out and see countless people come to help push it out of its predicament in the spirit of the festival. I then inched my way down the line into centeroo until I finally got in and began to wander around to the various tents and listen to the relatively unknown acts of the festival as it fires up.

I found my way to This Tent where I caught a few minutes of a new to me band called The Lonely Forest, a pretty straight forward garage/alt rock act that easily kicked off my Bonnaroo experience with a bang.

After catching the last songs of The Lonely Forest’s set I found myself at That Tent watching Orgone, a Funky, Soulistic, R & B experience which had the crowd at their mercy.

As day faded to night, Yelawolf took the stage in a whirlwind performance that he dedicated to the recently deceased MCA of The Beastie Boys. In the middle of his set he shifted from his rap based show to play sections of songs that inspired him to get to where he is today. He led the audience in a sing along to bands ranging from Lynard Skynard to Metallica to the beastie boys and then closed out his set strong after he had the audience in the palm of his hand.

Day one is now in the past and its time to get the party started with day two, and with the opening of the main stage it should be a good first full day of music!
