CRANE Interview

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman July 26, 2017 12:06 pm Tagged With: alt-pop, Alternative, Los Angeles, Pop, United States

CRANE

In this interview spotlight, we chat with CRANE about their latest project, influences, navigating the digital music world and more.

Full Q&A along with links and streams available below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

We are from Los Angeles, California! Our primary music genre is definitely alternative, although we push a lot of limits and even jump genres with our music. For example, on our last EP “Pretty Little Girl” is nothing like “Drunk Summer” Pretty Little Girl” is more or less an acoustic song, while “Drunk Summer” is an EDM style song. We really just love to do what we feel, while still having a recognizable tone and sound in each variance of song.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

It’s not so much what led me, as much as ‘what pulled’ me into music. I can’t turn off my passion for it. Anyone who knows me knows that I have tossed away a social life in exchange for writing new music. I constantly am writing and always motivated to put out music that makes people think, relate, and feel an emotion!

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

It’s not too far different, as our single “Fast Life” was actually intended to be on our Fear of Flight EP. Because of time constraints we ended up just leaving “Fast Life” as its own entity.

Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?

Our biggest hurdle is definitely the amount of saturation in the music industry. You really have to be different, while at the same time…relatable and familiar, which can become quite a challenge! Music has become so much more accessible to everyone, which is amazing, but it adds many more faces to the equation.

Where can we follow you online and hear more music?
