Interview with Eden Warsaw – Searching for Someone

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman August 17, 2016 4:00 am Tagged With: Alternative, Canada, Electronic, Pop, Toronto

Eden-Warsaw.jpg
Eden Warsaw is the next wave of Toronto pop music, his unique songs blend electronic, pop, and alternative all into one fresh sound. Over the last 3 years Eden has been hard at work writing and recording his recently released EP ‘Dream of Beaches’ and the debut album ‘Searching For Someone’. All of the songs reveal the wide range of emotions that Eden writes with; the California road-trip reminiscence of Dream of Beaches, the progressive electronic-pop of Diamonds, and the dirty beats of Hurricane that showcase the confidence to go anywhere on the spectrum.

In this interview, we chat with Eden about his influences, his newest project, and more.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

I think one thing I’ve learned about making music is that you have to push your own boundaries. This whole album was an experiment on using sounds that haven’t really been used or mixing different genres in very subtle ways. The best part is if you take out one aspect (for instance the electronic part) then you have one genre, but if you take out the guitars you’re pooled into a different genre, and I prefer to have both sounds even if it’s not necessarily being done right now.

How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?

Hmmm two totally different questions, I recorded this album years ago and I’ve actually been sitting with it for quite some time and just didn’t want to put it out there. I was in no rush. I’ve been creating music seriously for about 7 years, the other 10 years I would say were practice and research. I only started releasing music to the public about 9 months ago.

Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?

I was never good at painting or drawing which is something I admire in others, so music is my form of doing that naturally. I like the fact that I can capture memories or thoughts in an audio form and create my own atmospheres to it. I guess what keeps me going is the fact that every new song I write is better than the last song and I’m wondering if and when that will reach its peak. So I keep chasing life and experiences to find the best songs.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

All I wanted to do on this project was something different. I wanted an underlying ‘pop’ genre but I wanted to go into a few different styles with it, such as indie rock, alt-pop, electronic, and singer-songwriter but always have something electronic tying every song together. Realistically I should have released this album when it was done but I just wasn’t in the right place to showcase it.

What was the last song you listened to?

Mutemath – Stratosphere

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

MP3’s I think. I love vinyl as well so buying vinyl with the download cards is pretty ideal. I was big into buying CD’s for years but I tried listening to one in my car the other day and I could hear the scratches in the mix which doesn’t happen to MP3’s so it made me re-think things.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

At the end of the day Spotify and Apple Music are fine, I don’t use band camp so I can’t say. I personally don’t like the idea of renting music and then giving an artist (any artist) 2 cents for playing it. But to each their own, I find more of a connection with music when I choose what I want to buy (vinyl or download) instead of just being able to listen to everything. It seems overwhelming, but like I said I realize the convenience to it and it’s fine if that’s what other people like.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?

Social Media. People see ads all day and since everyone with one track recorded is considered an artist now it comes down to popularity…which can also be bought online. I don’t know, it’s such a fake time to live in, in a sense. Then the record labels become attracted to someone because they think they’re popular when realistically that person can’t even write music. But it’s all a business from that aspect so I hope that true artists get their time as well. Go see a band live, that’ll tell you what their like.

Do you gig, tour or perform? Do you ever live stream? Where can music lovers see you live?

Yea we’ve been playing a lot of gigs throughout the city, and now we’ve started to venture outside of Toronto which was really fun. We haven’t tried to live stream yet but we do GoPro every show so maybe one day we’ll just post all of them or clips of them.

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?

The whole album is up on SoundCloud for now, we just put it up a few days ago. We’re working on a new album so we want people to have a chance to become familiar with the sound and moods so that they can see how big of a step we’ve taken on the new stuff. In terms of connecting we use Facebook and Instagram so anyone can message us at any time if they want to say hi.

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

I love being underestimated.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
