Elena Andujar Revives Flamenco, Blends With Hip Hop and Dance Music For Innovative, Uplifting Sounds

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman December 14, 2017 12:17 pm Tagged With: dance, edm, Florida, Hip Hop, United States

Elena Andujar-Flamenco In Time

Miami based artist Elena Andujar truly stands out in a musical world over saturated with predictable and conventional songs. Raised in an environment where Flamenco was a way of life, Elena’s music is a healthy and stimulating blend of Flamenco, Dance and Hip Hop.

You might be trying to wrap your mind around how that might sound… Trust me when I say, Flamenco In Time is awesome.

It doesn’t matter that I have little knowledge of Flamenco, rarely just sit back and listen to dance music, or don’t understand every word she sings; what does matter is how Elena’s music uplifts the spirit, doesn’t allow you to sit still, and sounds so refreshing you can’t help but love the seamless union of  eclectic and traditionally contrasting styles.

From the opening Una Vez Mas to the various mixes of El Despertador and Es Asi, we are treated with a non-stop barrage of engaging, body moving music. El Despertador includes a club mix as well as Matt’s Late Night Workout Mix. Es Asi comes in three variations: club mix, Matt and MyMy’s Discofunk Mix and Matt’s Peak Hour Mix.

When you add Flamenco guitar and it’s other elements into the dance mix, you end up with soulful, soaring, nylon-stringed guitar runs you can groove and break a sweat to.

My 8 year old son just ran in the room and said, “this is great music” and then danced his way back to what he was doing.

Elena has quite the impressive history under her belt. She made her film debut in The Devil’s Advocate dancing with Al Pacino.  Film then led her to being a singer in Mike Figgs’ documentary Flamenco Women (VPRO, Holland and Channel 4, United Kingdom). For fans of photography, Richard Avedon included a portrait of Elena in his autobiography. Elena is currently the main artist in the documentary Flamenco: Passion In Danger which focuses on her life as a modern day Flamenca singer and dancer.

Flamenco In Time is now available on Bandcamp.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
