Eric Selby Finds His Rhythm on new EP “Starting To Sync In”

by Leslie Sherman January 27, 2025 6:49 am Tagged With: 2025, Americana, Folk, new music, Rock, singer, songwriter, United States

With Starting To Sync In, Eric Selby delivers a richly textured and adventurous EP that blends alternative folk, psychedelic rock and soulful Americana.

Known for his intricate songwriting and multi-instrumental talent, Selby continues to re-define his sound.

Recorded between Arlington, Virginia and Nashville, this collection of five tracks displays his journey as an artist, as he continues to explore folk inspired storytelling while embracing expansive musical influences.

Listen in here:

In the opening single “Issues”, Selby brings humor with vulnerability and sharp observation into his lyrics. Born from a spontaneous moment with his wife, the song captures the lighthearted yet deeply personal nature of self-reflection.

It has an infectious groove and clever wordplay, making it an instant standout, and is has an almost conversational vocal delivery with layered instrumentation that feels organic and refined. But it also doesn’t take itself too seriously. Selby still manages to say something real.

There is a dreamy detour with “Wine Stains”, a track that pays homage to the golden era of psychedelia. Channeling the lush, exploratory spirit of albums like Revolver and Pet Sounds, Selby and producer Marco Delmar construct an intricate soundscape featuring tablas, cello, and swirling sonic textures. Lyrically, the song pushes back against the notion that one needs an external guide to process life’s experiences, with the chorus “I don’t need a sommelier to tell me, it’s just wine stains” delivering a playful yet poignant message about self-awareness.

“Flow” carries beautiful and layered harmonies that drift effortlessly over a dreamy guitar hook, creating an almost hypnotic soundscape. The production feels both intimate and expansive, with subtle textures that rise and fall like waves.

At the heart of the EP is “Because Of You,” a beautifully intimate love song that stands out for its sincerity. In a world where digital connections often replace genuine human interaction, this song serves as a reminder of the grounding power of real love. Selby’s vocals are warm and earnest and are supported by a lush arrangement that subtly builds in intensity.

The richness of Starting To Sync In is no accident. The EP was recorded with an impressive roster of musicians in both Virginia and Nashville, bringing together some of the industry’s most seasoned players. The final touch came from Andy Walter at Abbey Road Studios, whose mastering work ties together the varied recording environments into one cohesive, immersive listening experience.

Walter, with his distinguished portfolio that includes The Beatles, David Bowie, U2, Radiohead, The Who, The Cure, and Roger Waters, expertly crafted the final master, merging the unique elements from both Virginia and Nashville studios into an immersive sound that feels cohesive and captivating from start to finish.

The stunning cover photo for “Starting To Sync In” was captured by Crystle Chrispen Photography, while the captivating artwork and design were brought to life by Brain Flower Designs.

With Starting To Sync In, Eric Selby once again proves that he is not just a talented musician, but also a storyteller, an explorer, an artist unafraid to push his music in new directions. Whether he is delivering clever lyrical observations, lush psychedelic soundscapes, or heartfelt ballads, there is an undeniable authenticity to his work.

This is an EP that reflects an artist fully coming into his own, embracing his influenes while forging a sound that is uniquely his.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
