Interview with A Brilliant Lie – The Tarot

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 8, 2019 9:17 am Tagged With: alternative rock, Florida, hard rock, Rock, United States

In this interview spotlight, I chat with A Brilliant Lie about their latest project, motivations, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

We are from Orlando, Florida, and we play hard rock with catchy melodies and emotive lyrics.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

The passion to create something genuine and unique. We have all played music in different types of bands over the years, but being in A Brilliant Lie has fueled that passion harder than ever before. Staying motivated and on-course really comes down to doing what we love to do with each other.  We hope that the music we create resonates with people in their own unique individual ways. Plus, we have a blast on-stage and driving around the country in our van making fun of each other.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

Our new single “The Tarot” is the first single off our new EP “Threads: Weaver” (Out March29th). The EP is the final installment in a 3-EP collection that we have been releasing in stages over the past couple of years.

We feel that this EP and the single are bigger musically, vocally, and dynamically, and have more energy overall. But there is a little more darkness to the record, and if you listen from the first EP until now you could hear it sort of happening. That, of course, wasn’t intentional but it just came with time and everyone getting more comfortable writing together.  One of the main points of starting the 3-EP collection was to embrace the changes we made (and continued to make) as a band.  Our hope was that audiences could be a part of our evolution and growth.

Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?

It can (and has been) both helpful AND a hinderance. Technology has helped us in recording, marketing, and heck – even getting our music to people on the other side of the world!  But on the flipside, it has completely flooded the market.  Audiences get lost in a sea of options when it comes to music, because an endless catalog is at their fingertips. We have to do everything in our power to promote ourselves online so we don’t get lost in the shuffle.

Meanwhile, our band is also out there “fighting the good fight.”  We’re constantly touring, playing shows, selling merch, etc.  All we can do is hustle on all fronts and hope people dig what we’re doing.  ‘Cause we think it’s pretty rad!

Where can we follow you online and hear more music?

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
