Interview with Bad Bubble – Frustrate

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman August 6, 2025 1:05 pm Tagged With: Chicago, Illinois, indie, singer, songwriter, synth, synth pop, United States

Bad Bubble-Frustrate

Bad Bubble (aka BB) has delivered his latest single, Frustrate, which is now streaming on your favorite platform. Be sure to connect with BB on his official website.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with BB about the recording process, dream collabs, earliest music memories, and more!

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Can you briefly describe your sound and style for our readers? I could describe it, but let’s hear it in your words.

I guess it’s electronic music-synthpop…with vocals…

I’m not good at this. There’s genres I’ve never heard of

But yeah, electronic synthpop I believe hits the closest.

Also soft piano/vocals a lot of the time…

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific with Frustrate? What was the inspiration or driving force behind creating this song?

I wanted to achieve something I would consider good…I usually write what I want to hear or what I wish others would write…& maybe they do somewhere & I just haven’t had it come across my desk. Frustrate was supposed to be something else entirely. But a last minute shift in dynamics led it to a completely different place. The song you hear is that last minute decision…or roughly 20 minutes post decision

Can you tell us about your production process? I really love that you’re recording with an old school TASCAM 24.

I have recorded hundreds of songs on that TASCAM Model 24 since the Summer of 2022. I’ve since moved on, but having that level of control is deeply missed…

It keeps you honest…no plug-ins, no simulations. Just you, the mixing board, and your hardware. And there’s another thing I miss greatly: hardware. I used the Korg Wavestate and I know that weapon more than I know myself. Its destinations are infinite! I miss how its sound progressed along with the song. Software has its advantages, granted. However, having those sliders and knobs is unmistakable. Kind of like a car. Is a 2018 Toyota Camry newer than a 1965 Ford Mustang? Yes. Would I choose the Camry over the Mustang, even with all the bells and whistles? Hell no!

What is your earliest music memory? Or a moment that sticks out for motivating you to write, record, and release music?

My mother was the best piano player/vocalist I have ever heard. I remember how when she played, all conversations stopped, all eyes were on her. Period…in my opinion, had she played live on any given network as she has for whatever amount of people were over at our house at the time, say 12-13, she would have achieved greatness. I’m that confident. I’ve seen many piano players, famous and non famous…she beats them all. At 3 years old and all throughout the rest of my childhood, that was what I witnessed on a regular basis…greatness…

She never had a career. She had me instead. So that motivates me to put as much down as I can.
I firmly believe, more so now than ever before, the very best in the world….are not famous.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why?

I’m not a big collaborator guy….i have a couple of times but I like having the control. But there’s a reason. I played in a punk rock band throughout the Midwest United States for years. That knocked the collaboration clean out of me…

But in the spirit of your question:

My mother…that would be something….

Famous: I would say the Shins.

Non-famous…I once saw a guy on the street in Chicago near Wrigley Field. He was playing the guitar. I wasn’t really paying attention to the sound as much as the look he had in his eye…

He played as if 5 million people were listening and watching. He wasn’t jumping around or anything. In fact, he stood still with a crappy old guitar and performed as if a great spotlight were on him. I stood there with a friend of mine and we were both just blown away…I would like to find that guy and I would open a show for him/collaborate/whatever….i don’t even know his name…but I know he too achieved greatness.

I know it’s hard…but do you have a favorite song (or artist) of all time? Or Top 3?

Okay. As of July 2025, my top 3:
-Prince
-The Shins
-Joywave.
Favorite song: Something I Can Never Have-NIN

Where’s the best place to keep up with your latest releases?

Honestly, SoundCloud. I have everything up…

But the usual places as well. Spotify, Apple, Deezer etc..

Social media: I’m most active on X and Instagram… @badbubblemusic on all platforms.

And of course: www.badbubble.net

I appreciate Your time. Any last thoughts before signing off?

Thank you very much for having me!
Always!
-BB

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
