Becky Raisman

In this interview spotlight, I chat with singer/songwriter Becky Raisman about the latest music, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music can be found below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I’m originally from Chicagoland area Highland Park, IL and Waukegan, IL. I do pop some rock and I’m working on country/rock songs.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

I’ve been singing since elementary school at Red Oak Elementary School in Highland Park, il, then continued at Edgewood Middle School and Highland park high school all in Highland Park, IL. My first music teacher from Red oak mrs. Skumurski really got me into it. I went to Sports Camp when I was a teenager in the 90s and I would sing and put on shows for campers. My camp counselors Vicki Wyatt and Meredith Lee said I had talent. I got my degree from Columbia College Chicago. I studied with different voice teachers Tamara Anderson, Jeffrey Morrow and Randy Buescher. I’m going back to do online lessons with Tanara. I aldo studied at School of Rock in Libertyville. Now in in Charleston, South Carolina and taking lessons at Bach to Rock. I take keyboard lessons there. I also took keyboard lessons at Family piano company in Waukegan, IL. Right now I’m learning Ableton.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

These songs are new to release and I never released before. I’m working on 2 country rock songs now. Going to record in the spring in Memohi.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Online us great way to connect social media.

What was the last song you listened to?

Oh gosh too many.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Well, I don’t gave a CD player anymore so I stream.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Why not both. But Spotify needs to pay artists more. I mean a lot more.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

Soundcloud or reverbnation.com

Anything else before we sign off?

Do open mics, singing contests , collab that’s what I’m doing. Reach out.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
