Interview with A Bloody Chasm – Better Under Ground

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman February 22, 2023 7:23 pm Tagged With: California, hard rock, Metal, Rock, United States

A Bloody Chasm

In this interview spotlight, I chat with A Bloody Chasm about the latest music, dream collabs, favorite memories and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

What’s something you’d like readers to know about your latest project?

We’d like readers to know that our latest project is very spooky, melancholy and yet, fun. We believe that most, if not all, can relate to the feelings these songs project. It is totally okay to feel sad, confused about life, worried about death, and gloominess overall; but know this…you must not forget to understand why you’re so unsure about life and your feelings and take the time to dance and have fun when you’re done expressing your gloom. Our feelings change like the seasons and it’s just a part of life. Enjoy every moment like it’s your last. You really don’t know when we are next; But that’s okay, even more of a reason to run towards your dreams. NOW. You got this.

How does this project compare with your other release(s)? Was there anything specific you were trying to accomplish?

Compared to the previous release, this project is a bit shorter in length so it is considered an EP. As far as tone and mood goes, as my fellow comrade, Johnny Angel of Delphic Sibyl helped me describe: I would say that this new release has an even more haunting ambience. Digging deeper into the sounds of fear and despair; especially through the vocals. I want the audience to have a sense of anxiety, horror and feelings of mortality because nightmares can be challenging and fun—-and it is something we must all deal with; although it is quite a challenge, you must know that we can all get through a nightmare and a hellish day or night here on Earth. It takes practice but you can get through anything. I like tapping into the creepiness of dark chanting mixed with bleak outcomes; No escape, no conscience; just the nature of the universal way of things. And although I am a human full of conscience, I have my dark and cold phases like the moon, stars and seasons.

What motivates you to create music?

Mostly personal life experiences and my favorite music are what motivate me to create music. I want to share these feelings with the world to broadcast the fact that we are all human beings and we are all very similar in many, many ways.

What’s one of your first or most powerful music memories? Did that play any role in driving you to create?

One of my first and most powerful music memories happened back in 2007 when I would constantly be challenging myself while playing Guitar Hero III- Legends of Rock. That’s when my family and I knew that I needed my own guitar and that I would aspire to be a great, rock ‘n’ roll  legend,  myself, one day. (Still to be!)

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

If I could collaborate with anyone-dead or alive, famous or unknown- It would be Kurt Cobain, because I relate to the feelings he projects as well as truly dig the overall grunge sound of his band, Nirvana. I would collaborate with Joan Jett, because she is a female rock ‘n’ roll legend whom I also relate with because of the rebellious songs she sang and played in her first band, The Runaways as well as in her solo band Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. One lesser known band I’d love to collaborate with is La Luz and their singer/writer/guitarist, Shana Cleveland. She and her bandmates in La Luz have the most beautiful and angelic voices I have ever heard and I literally cried when I first saw them play in Santa Cruz, CA November 2021 at Moe’s Alley. Their sound is so classic, relaxing yet fun. It reminds me of 60s rock n roll. They’re surfy and psychedelic sounding as well. I love them. These Three artists are my main inspirations to how I create my music…but there are so many others, it’s crazy. There’s a whole metal side to my creations that stem from bands such as Black Sabbath, Slayer, Metallica, Ghoul, and more. Here is a link for La Luz and for Ghoul (two of my top 3 favorite bands): Music | La Luz (bandcamp.com) Ghoul (bandcamp.com)

What was the last song you listened to? And who is one of your favorite all-time bands/artists?

The last song I listened to was A Bloody Chasm’s “Better Under Ground” song because we just released this EP so I’ve been all about it…BUT the last song by a different artist was A Day in the Life by The Beatles. One of my favorite artists besides the ones I’ve mentioned previously in this interview would be Madonna. She is the first favorite artist I ever enjoyed listening to as a child of just 6 years of age. I grew up with the Immaculate Collection album and I would replay it like there was no tomorrow. I’d love to make people dance and feel the way she has made me feel. I can tell music is her life blood. She is a legend and is truly a great inspiration to me.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?

I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?

We truly appreciate your time as well and thank you so much for being interested in our spooky, fun, little/big band! We want to spread the word and the word is UNITY. We are all in this together and we hope that our music can contribute to helping all lost and found souls find their place in this world. No matter how you grew up or what your situation or tastes are in life, we are one and we must love each other and let each other know that it’s going to be alright if we stick together and be kind to one another. Let’s keep going, we all got this. \m/
