Interview with Buster Baer – Mock Twang

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 24, 2022 12:07 pm Tagged With: California, indie pop, Pop, singer, songwriter, United States

Buster Baer-Mock Twang

Retro-indie pop artist Buster Baer has just released his latest EP, Mock Twang. The four-track EP features Buster Baer’s vintage indie style through various instrumentals that accompany his groovy, silken vocals.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Buster about the latest music, adapting during a pandemic, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and how do you describe your style of music?

I’m from Hermosa Beach, CA and I’d describe my music style as honest and eclectic.

How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?

My parents are in the comedy business. I was going to be an actor, and then a playwright, and then a novelist, and then a poet, and then a songwriter. Stick around and find out what I turn into next.

How does your latest EP Mock Twang compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?

I had some success with this track “Hey Medusa” and I wanted to explore that voice further. I picked around at the hookiness. These tracks are definitely ear wormy. And it’s the best production I’ve been able to achieve yet. Growing every single time though so watch out.

What was your favorite song to record for this EP?

I did them all piece by piece at the same time, so they weren’t separate experiences. But I recorded the acoustic guitar for “Gone Fishin’” on a fricken canoe in the middle of a lake, that was sick. I cried at the end of the vocal take for “In His Image” too, which isn’t like fun, but it was emotional.

Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented times? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?

It wasn’t that hard except that I missed getting my ego stroked by a large audience. It was a shift at the beginning because I didn’t know who the audience was anymore, there was no scene and it felt like there was no future. But see, I never had trouble with the creativity thing, that’s what helped me survive.

What was the last song you listened to?

“Strings of Life” by Rhythim is Rhythim. Been discovering early electronic digs lately, gonna mess around with that.

Which do you prefer- Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?

I like vinyl! And I guess I like streaming platforms too? I don’t really care. That’s like asking a man on the run if he likes trains or cars better, I’m just trying to get there.

Where is the best place to connect with you and follow Buster Baer’s journey?

Real life, I’m on all the socials and stuff too. Instagram @BusterBaer and TikTok @BusterTheBaer.

I really appreciate your time. Anything else before we sign off?

Yes, I love you.
