Interview with danny G – villain

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 8, 2019 9:27 am Tagged With: indie pop, Nashville, Pop, singer, songwriter, United States

dnny

From a young age, danny G has balanced playing three sports and performing in select choirs. He wrote his first song at just 7 years old and has always loved sharing the joys of music with others through performance. Now a soon-to-be Belmont University graduate, danny G recently left his successful career as a D1 soccer player to focus on music full-time.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with danny G about his latest release, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I’m from Centennial Colorado! Well actually born in New York which is where my parents grew up but we moved to Colorado after 6 months. I make pop music with some hip-hop influence. My stuff is super genuine and uplifting, and I just try and write songs that resonate with people and inspire them. Sound wise I’m super influenced by guys like Charlie Puth, Drake, and Anthony Russo.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

It’s just been what I’ve loved to do ever since I could walk. I grew up an athlete as well as a musician but I always knew what I’d end up doing. I’ve always wanted to reach people on a larger scale, and my music is my way of doing that. The support from my family and friends really keeps me going, I just want to make them proud and buy my parents stuff honestly. And I just feel I was put on this earth to inspire and spread my truth.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

I think when you’re just starting it’s just tough to get people to care man. It’s always tough as a musician with how short our cultures’ attention span has become, but when you’re just starting it’s even harder. It’s like why listen to this dude instead of someone who I’m already certain I’ll be into? Technology has definitely helped though, just in giving me a larger platform to show the world who I am. I’m able to share bits of my life with a pretty large audience every single day with the click of a button, which is just so incredible.

What was the last song you listened to?

Touchscreen Navigation by Swae Lee. I pick an album every week and study it, this week it’s “Swaecation” and that’s the first song on there. It slaps.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Well actually it’s funny because I don’t have an aux in my car, so I have to burn a new CD every week for whatever album I’m listening to. So I guess I gotta go CDs on that one. Probably the only remaining person on earth that would answer CDs.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Spotify hands down. I love all the discover playlists and I’ve been turned on to so many cool new artists through Spotify.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

I’m on everything, Instagram and twitter it’s dnnyofficial1, Facebook just search danny G. And then my website is www.dannygofficial.com! Oh also join my mailing list on my site I give a bunch of free stuff away because I feel fans our giving me their time so I should give them something in return.

Anything else before we sign off?

Share, playlist and listen to villain if you haven’t! There are some big prizes you can win through that too. But other than that, thanks so much for having me this has been awesome!
