Interview with Dava – Be Still

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman December 5, 2022 6:15 pm Tagged With: Acoustic, Czechoslovakia, Europe, Folk, singer, songwriter, World

DAVA-Be Still

A unique music project inspired by spirituality, conscious lifestyle, sustainability, and nature, Dava details the unfolding musical journey of Czech singer-songwriter Vaclav Polansky. After delivering his stellar debut album in March of 2021, Vaclav has continued to explore the healing powers of music, creating moving indie releases that speak straight to the heart and soul of every listener.

In true form, ‘Be Still’ was written and recorded with the intention of providing a healthy effect to the listener, delivering a moving, acoustic sound that grows and transforms with ease. An effortless and wonderfully textured piece, the single builds from solitary, atmospheric tones and the open sounds of nature, building a gentle foundation that is both seamless and melodic. From there, Vaclav builds a brilliant acoustic melody, mixing soft guitar chords with serene vocals to create a truly calming and expressive piece.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Dava about the recent project, motivations, dream collabs and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

What’s something you’d like readers to know about your latest project?

Recently I released my new single “Be Still” that I recorded with UK music producer Ben Wilson from Acre Base Studios. All of my music is inspired by my own life journey to self-awareness and  conscious lifestyle, and this song is no exception.

How does this project compare with your other release(s)? Was there anything specific you were trying to accomplish?

I wrote the song with the intention of providing a healing effect to the listener.  I remember that morning I spent some time in meditation and then at the end I tried to connect with the universe (source, god – whatever resonates with you) and asked to use me and my talents to create something that will serve others.

What motivates you to create music?

Music has been my greatest passion since childhood, but I only found a deeper sense of making music a few years ago after my spiritual awakening. Besides the joy I get from making or playing music, my biggest motivation is to serve the world, help and inspire others. It’s such a beautiful feeling that warms my heart when people tell me, for example, that my music helped them get through difficult times in their lives.

DAVA means “medicine” in Hindu language, which is something I didn’t know at the time I started DAVA and I believe it is not a coincidence.

What’s one of your first or most powerful music memories? Did that play any role in driving you to create?

Being surrounded by music, it’s hard to say the strongest, but what comes to mind now is one of my earliest musical memories ever. : )  It was in a kindergarten class and I was imitating the synth lead rhythm of a very popular and slightly annoying song that was playing on the radio. I remember the teacher was very impressed with my skills. 🙂

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

In general, I can say that I am open to working with like-minded people, regardless of musical style. Among contemporary artists, I could mention, for example:

Sam Garrett https://www.instagram.com/samgarrettmusic/

Fia https://www.instagram.com/thisisfiamusic/

Deva Premal and Miten ….. and many others.

What was the last song you listened to? And who is one of your favorite all-time bands/artists?

I think the last song I listened to was “When You Believe” from the Movie Prince of Egypt. It is such a beautiful song that always touches my heart. In general now I don’t listen to music as much as I used to although the list of my favorite artists could be really long. I have always enjoyed music across genres. To mention at least a few, for example: Pink Floyd, Damien Rice, The Civil Wars, Sting, Glen Hansard, W. A. Mozart …

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
