Interview: Dave Whitty

by Leslie Sherman June 26, 2024 11:28 am

Dave Whitty is a singer/songwriter from St. John’s, NL. Dave has released three solo albums since 2012, with a fourth underway. If you listen to his music, it won’t take long to hear the pride he has for his home province, capturing Newfoundland’s joie de vivre and beauty. Dave writes and sings about real-life experiences; his folky storytelling style tells tales woven through playful lyrics and infectious melodies about his relationships and his unique perspective.

New single, “Ducks in a Row,” was written coming out of the pandemic. It’s about the struggle of an artist during those times, and also as a person ages and matures. The music industry and being an artist is hard, and as one gets older it becomes even more difficult to keep the fire burning, to stay relevant, to keep on top of everything. It’s a coming of age tale about perseverance and pushing through.

The title came from a quote Dave‘s mother would use frequently. She would say things like “if you’re going to do ______, you better get your ducks in a row,” as in, get whatever you need done together, to make sure you are giving yourself the best opportunity.

This song is fun and uplifting. A perfect road trip song, when the sun is starting to set and you have the open road ahead of you. I think everyone can relate to the feeling of being a little lost in life and their career, and trying to push through to get to the other side.

What can you share with readers about your new project?
This is the first single from my upcoming fourth studio album, scheduled for release in September.

How does this release compare with your past projects?
I feel my songwriting has evolved significantly since my last release in 2018. As I’ve matured, so has my music, making this project particularly meaningful.

What about this single makes you most proud?
I’m most proud of the positive reactions from fans who have been eagerly awaiting new music.

Was there a specific goal you aimed to achieve with this release?
My main goal was to land this single on major Spotify curated playlists, and so far, it’s been going well!

What inspires you to create music and keeps you motivated?
I find inspiration in real-life experiences, from my travels to unique situations through my work on a TV show. I love being on stage and sharing new music with people, which keeps me going.

If you could collaborate with anyone—dead or alive, famous or unknown—who would it be and why?
Growing up on the east coast of Canada, I admire Ron Hynes, a legendary songwriter. Collaborating with him would have been a dream, learning from his wisdom and creating music together.

What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
I recently enjoyed “Pink Skies” by Zach Bryan. My favorite artists include Jason Isbell, Ruston Kelly, Donovan Woods, Joel Plaskett, and Ron Hynes.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
You can find me everywhere as “@davewhitty” or visit my website at www.davewhitty.com.

Is there anything else you’d like to share before we sign off?
The music industry has always been tough, and I appreciate the genuine support from those interested in my music.
