Interview with DJ Moves – Bass, Breaks & VHS Tapes

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman November 14, 2024 1:52 pm Tagged With: Canada, Hip Hop, producer

DJ Moves-Bass Breaks and VHS Tapes

Black Buffalo Records proudly presents the release of DJ Moves‘ latest album, “Bass, Breaks and VHS Tapes.” This exceptional album combines hip-hop and electronic sounds, showcasing DJ Moves’ signature bass across 13 tracks. With collaborations from Electric City Underground and Tachichi, the album is available in digital, CD, and cassette tape formats.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with DJ Moves about the new release, AI, dream collabs, and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

This AI thing is getting way out of control. I have students using ChatGPT to write death metal songs about country music…and country songs about being sad. You can feed some Ais a text prompt and create a Hollywood-quality short film. How do you feel about this new wave of technological innovation?

I feel its the same as everything throughout our time on the planet.  Tech keeps going up forcing us to change. Good in some ways like tasks can be done faster but very bad in others like, now a computer u buy can make a song for u, u dont have to do anything anymore.  Lol. Terrible. Anyone seen the movie terminator?

I know it’s hard…but what’s your favorite song and/or favorite artist of all time? If not favorite, in your top 3?

My fav group is The Boogie Boys and my fav song ever is by Whodini – One Love

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific or different with this project? What’s the back story?

Yes I’d always wanted to make a faster rap album but couldn’t get enough mcs to rhyme on it.  So I got a singer and of coarse Tachichi to rhyme on a track (he can rhyme to any speed of beat). They are on 4 songs and the rest is just great fast hiphop beats. All made with an element sampled from vhs tapes and movies I’d watched and sampled their music or sound effects.

What drives you to create? What keeps you going, especially on the bad days?

Music is my release from all the bad things in life. I love creating something from almost nothing and having it turn out correctly .

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? Please plug them with a link so readers can check them out.

I always wanted to make a song with Divine Styler, Brother J and Sugafree.
