Interview with Doug Shock Band – She Devil

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 13, 2023 3:32 pm Tagged With: indie rock, Rock, Tennessee, United States

Doug Shock Band

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Doug Shock about the She Devil release, dream collabs, choosing a favorite song and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Are you able to choose a favorite song of all time? Or would you label this an impossible task? If yes, what’s the song? If no, what’s your current Top 3?

Rock n Roll – Led Zeppelin

What about this project makes you most proud? Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?

I’m most proud of this release because it was hard. My producer Travis Wyrick did an incredible job of pulling the best possible performance out of me. He also made sure I explored and experimented with lyrics. “Is there a better way to say what you’re trying to say in the song?”, “Are you sure you want to use that word there?” or “That sounds dumb, people don’t talk like that, don’t sing that.” My goal was to have a strong Rock single and a provocative video to go with it. Push some boundaries, make some people uncomfortable and maybe even a little Horny!

What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?

I get my musical inspiration from Life, Love and Loss. Rock n Roll is the Blues and The Blues is Rock n Roll. I’m never going to read a fantasy novel and write songs about dragons and quests for gold. I’ve lived my songs of heartbreak, loneliness, excess and even the good times! The best songs hit me like lightning and are usually finished in 30 minutes, sometimes more. Truth and experience make for great storytelling, especially in my songwriting. You fall in love and it’s the greatest thing ever! So, you whip out a happy song and it’s sunshine and roses, until you find out she’s been “falling in love ” with a bunch of other guys at the same time so, BAM! Now you’ve got yourself a handful of heart breaking ballads and blues tunes. Expressing how painful or joyful a certain time or situation made you feel is Music. Music is feeling. Many times Music is letting go of feelings. When your Music connects with someone else’s feelings, it’s Magic. Music is Magic.

I’m motivated to keep going because life keeps happening. Connecting with an audience and seeing someone’s face light up because your lyrics reach them or spark a memory, be it good or bad, it’s a special thing that happens with music. Magic

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why?

Bear Rinehart of NeedToBreathe because of his power, lyrics and emotions.

Luke Spiller of The Struts because he’s the baddest Rock n Roll lead singer doing it today!

What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?

The last song I listened to was Arkansas by Chris Stapleton

My favorite all-time bands/ artists are Black Crowes, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen,Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lenny Kravitz, John Mayer, Chris Stapleton,The Struts and Robert Jon and The Wreck
