Interview with Fitzsimon and Brogan (FaB)

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 28, 2019 12:35 pm Tagged With: indie pop, indie rock, London, pop rock, United Kingdom

Fitzsimon and Brogan-Girl In A Gilded Cage

I recently published a write up about Fitzsimon and Brogan’s latest single Girl In A Gilded Cage.

I was also able to get some of the duo’s time for the below Q&A. We discuss the new release, technology, listening preferences and more

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre
classifications.)

We’re from London. Our style of music is guitar driven melodic pop/rock, but we don’t just stick to that one genre. We have diversified, written ballads and even written a musical.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

We both felt that it wasn’t enough to just listen to and watch bands. We wanted to do it ourselves. Neil: I was always fascinated by songwriters. Bee: I had a mature taste in music from a very young age.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

We are just trying to put out good quality songs that we hope other people will appreciate, and so far, we’re glad to say that this has been the case.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Well, there is no doubt that the internet has opened up a whole new world for indie musicians, but it has also created a bit of a monster when the royalty payments from online streaming are so pitiful. We hope that something can be done about this in the future. The big plus with technology is that thousands of people can listen to your music as where years ago, that would have been almost impossible.

What was the last song you listened to?

We’ve been listening to Nick Lowe a lot recently. As well as being a brilliant songwriter in his own right, he also produced a lot of Elvis Costello’s early albums. We’re going to see Nick Lowe live in May and we’re both looking forward to it.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Vinyl, of course. CDs lack the beauty of owning an album with all of the artwork and having the lyrics there, so that listening to the music becomes a personal experience. As for MP3s, good to have but the sound quality is somewhat lacking.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

At the moment we love ITunes as our latest single, Girl in a Gilded Cage, has reached number one in the ITunes’ Chart in Belgium.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

Our website, www.fitzsimonandbrogan.com – our music is on all download portals. You can find more information about us from our label WTPL, France and Michael Stover at MTS Management. Also, at Atlantic Screen Group. We’re also on Facebook and Twitter.

Anything else before we sign off?

Thanks for the great review you gave to us. It’s always brilliant for musicians to know that there music is being appreciated…. Many thanks, Neil and Bee from FaB.
