Interview with Harvest Falls

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman July 31, 2020 8:37 am Tagged With: hard rock, Metal, New Jersey, United States

Harvest Falls

In this interview spotlight, I chat with members of Harvest Falls about their music, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

Harvest Falls hails from East Rutherford NJ, near the famous Meadowlands.    You know, where the Sopranos are from!  We are basically somewhere between metal and melodic hard rock.    Meleddal?

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

We just found each other through various ways and means, and the love of metal just keeps it going.  The band and the songs just keep getting better.  COVID is going to weed out a lot of bands I think, who just get used to staying at home and not working hard at their craft.  We are at it every day, thinking, creating.   Staying into the scene.   Doing whatever we can.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

It is the first release with Cameron Simione on percussion as a member.   He is going to open a lot of eyes soon.   I thing “Brand New Day” is a strong song and a good reminder of what we do best – Big Chorus, great hook and harmonies, and it kicks ass.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Tech has helped in just keeping us connected.   JamKazam if you are near your router/hardwired, or Zoom can be great at-home rehearsal tools.   Everyone needs to have a DAW now and to be able to record parts at home, or you are at a creative standstill.   Its easier than ever to be able to lay down easy to understand parts and demos.   Even me as a bassist, I can create a whole drumline in 30 minutes for a 4-5 min song, and have a whole idea charted in a couple of hours, with vocals.    Google Drive it over to the band, and start anew.

What was the last song you listened to?

Morrissey “Hairdresser on Fire”.    Man cannot live on metal alone, lol.

Before that, Beartooth “the Lines”.  Then Radiohead “I might be wrong”.  We have odd tastes for a metal band!

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

My dayjob is in tech, so my heart says mp3 for ease of use.   My audiophile self with my 10k speakers says CD or Vinyl.   You can buy a 10k turntable, you know?  That’s crazy.  I have some double gram LPs that I will keep in the packaging and never play, so I could say I am middle of the road here.     Ill take em all.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

We have the best response on the Insta/FB and our own website.   Your own website is a must in this day and age.   You can sell your own stuff on your site!    Be your own hub.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness.
