Interview with Jordan Andrew – Midnight

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 5, 2018 9:01 am Tagged With: lo-fi, New Jersey, R&B, Soul, United States

Jordan Andrew

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Jordan Andrew about the latest project, challenges, motivations and more.

Full Q&A along with music and links below.

Where are you from and what style of music would you classify yourselves as?

Originally, I’m from Denville, a small town in New Jersey.

Classifying my music is always hard, but I would call it something like Lofi-R&B.

My new music pulls a lot of inspiration from Lofi Hiphop Production & Contemporary R&B.

What led you down the path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

As a little kid, my parents really pushed me to play piano.

It’s crazy, but the simple music theory in those lessons is what led me here.

The one thing keeping me on this course is my love for music.

Music is my true passion and being able to create every day is a dream.

Another huge source of inspiration comes from the listeners.

Seeing people listen to my music worldwide is just mind-blowing.

How is “Midnight” different than your previous releases? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

“Midnight” is my first release in over a year, and only the second song with my own vocals on it.

Sonically, it feels a lot bigger than my previous productions, yet the tone of the song is really gritty.

In the studio, we didn’t really set out to accomplish anything specific, the pieces just kind of fell into place.

I remember being inspired by a lot of old J-Dilla & Madlib when the record was coming together.

Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

The biggest challenge of being a musician in the digital age is the market.

Piracy & streaming took a lot of value away from music, which is really challenging for artists.

On the upside, technology has helped me engage with my listeners.

Being able to communicate daily with my fanbase is super important.
