Interview with Joseph Eid – Listening To Madonna

Joseph Eid-Listening To Madonna
Joseph Eid’s new single Listening To Madonna now available!

SoCal based folk-pop singer/songwriter Joseph Eid’s new single is a story of an MTV generation kid journeying through life figuring out who he is meant to be. Despite societal norms and what others think, he realizes it is okay to be different.

Listening to Madonna travels through decades as it describes the impact the renowned pop singer had on youth. In her music she’d encourage listeners to be themselves and this song reinforces that message.

Listening to Madonna is a folky rock-pop track that soars with life. Joseph’s vibrant melodies and clever songwriting conceives an infectious summer hit that will assuredly release heartening and liberating feelings

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Eid about the latest release, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed writing. It’s more than just the love of singing, playing guitar, and performing in general. There is a deeper desire to document my observation of the world, life, myself and my relationships. The way I do this is by writing songs. It makes sense to me. It’s always felt very natural.

How is “Listening to Madonna” different than previous releases? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

The only difference in this song is that it’s probably the most revealing song I’ve ever written about myself. It’s an honest look at the past, present and future. I wasn’t trying to accomplish anything specific — I just remember consciously telling myself, write it all as it comes out. Don’t censor anything. So I think that’s why people connect with it.

“Listening to Madonna” mentions different methods of listening to music from Walkman CD Players to Casey’s Top 40 radio show. How do you prefer to listen to music now? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Now, my preferred way of listening is usually in my headphones through my iPhone or in my car through my phone. So I guess it’s digital mp3s. I listen to music everywhere, all day long so it’s about accessibility for me. I need it!

What was it like creating the music video for your new single? Did you come up with the concept?

Making the music video was a lot of fun. It’s basically a party with some of my closest friends here in Los Angeles. I came up with the idea while brainstorming with filmmaker and friend Patrick McPheron. We wanted to do something simple enough to film and yet have it be really engaging at the same time.  We decided that a one shot video from beginning to end using a drone camera would do it. And what better setting than a colorful summer backyard party. Our friends got really into it. That’s what makes it.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Well the biggest challenge is distributing the music when you release it. Without a huge budget and a label behind you, you can only get it so far by yourself. It’s a lot of work and you do your best to make sure you reach as many people as you can. Technology and social media helps a lot. You share as much as you possibly can and then those who love your music can share with their friends and communities and it can spread out. Technology only works for you if you are doing the work too and consistently engaging with your audience and growing.

What was the last song you listened to?

Rapid Boy by Jim Croce.  I was exploring his music as I do every now and then with older artists. It’s a fun one to play so I’ve added it to my list of covers.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

I pay for a monthly subscription to Apple Music and I love how I can have any song I want at my fingertips and instantly. It’s quite satisfying. I add an average of 5 or so songs to my library daily.  It’s worth the 10 bucks a month.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

Apple Music or Spotify.  All my releases are there.

Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2XVGoTI
