Interview with JUL!ET – Instant

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 13, 2024 2:07 pm Tagged With: electro pop, indie pop, Pop, Seattle, singer, songwriter, United States, Washington

JUL!ET-INSTANT

Seattle-based indie pop sensation JUL!ET has dropped her latest single, “INSTANT”. This song immerses listeners in a nostalgic yet youthful and euphoric pop sound with a blend of soft, yet strong vocals, and the polished allure of Top-40 radio, creating a sonic experience that resonates with indie love stories.

The track is adorned with pulsing synths and harmonies that effortlessly pull you back, inviting listeners to indulge in the carefree spirit of falling in love. The song serves as a poignant confession: a yearning for love without the burden of time, and JUL!ET‘s soulful vocals capture that essence of instant love.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with JUL!ET about the new release, AI in music, dream collabs, and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

This AI thing is getting way out of control. I have students using ChatGPT to write death metal songs about country music…and country songs about being sad. You can feed some Ais a text prompt and create a Hollywood-quality short film. How do you feel about this new wave of technological innovation?

As an indie artist who worked in the tech industry and studied business & engineering, I’m somewhat of a technophile and optimist when it comes to technological innovation in music. I believe that because art is ultimately made for humans, it will never become independent of human creativity. The biggest threat is the impact that generative AI could have on the viability of making a living as an artist, songwriter, producer, engineer, studio musician, or other creative. However, there is a lack of fair pay and value for art in this country regardless of this technological change. The conversation around AI is clearly important but also drowns out the more easily resolved issues: for example, simplifying the fragmented royalty collection system for artists and songwriters, paying performance royalties to musicians for radio play, and improving streaming revenue for artists.

I know it’s hard…but what’s your favorite song and/or favorite artist of all time? If not favorite, in your top 3?

My favorite song right now is ‘Claws’ by Charli XCX, and current favorite artist is also Charli. I just saw her performance and speech at the Billboard Women in Music show and was absolutely floored by her new song and music video. I’m a major stan and want to make more music like hers that pushes the boundaries of pop.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific or different with this project? What’s the back story?

With the ‘Instant’ single and music video, I wanted to have fun and create a futuristic, girly side of my pop aesthetic with a slight edge. When I wrote this, I was taking Charlie Puth’s songwriting and production course and was feeling super motivated to experiment with the techniques I was learning. That experience added a lot to the catchy feel and definitely influenced the bass line in this song. I love indie music and pop both and am really excited that I got to make something super poppy this time.

What drives you to create? What keeps you going, especially on the bad days?

I like feeling like a mad scientist in the lab – my home studio where I write and produce is my happy place. And I always enjoy writing with friends and listening to tons of music to stay inspired.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why?

Remi Wolf would be such a fun person to collaborate with! I can tell from her music and videos that she genuinely loves experimenting like I do. Her soul sounds bright and sunny, and I have so much to learn from her about singing.

Where is the best place to stay connected with you?

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
