Interview with Justo Ontario

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman September 1, 2017 10:19 am Tagged With: R&B, singer, songwriter, Soul, Virginia

Justo Ontario

In this interview spotlight, we chat with Justo Ontario about influences, the new project, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and streams below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I am from Woodbridge, Virginia (by way Washington, DC or also known as the “DMV” ).

Though i’m very eclectic in my influences and inspiration, i simply consider my music, R&B/Soul Music but fans and music critics do sometimes consider it “Neo Soul” or “alternative” R&B.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

Well, I’d probably say growing up in church with a gospel singing mother, a drumming brother, and a “oldies but goodies” father probably played a key role. I’m just simply a student to the words Rhythm and Blues so I dig deeper and deeper into that sound. Sometimes Rhythm and Blues leads me to Folk and sometimes it leads me to Rock n Roll.

I’m motivated to stay on the course due to knowing how much this style of music can shift an environment or atmosphere you know.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

My newest release is different from the rest because its a lot more packaged and polished vs my other projects were me experimenting and figuring out my sound. With this project I now have a better understanding of what it means to make timeless and memorable records.

Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

Yeah, I definitely face challenges sometimes in the digital age but ONLY because now people ANYBODY can put music out to the world therefore it seems over saturated HOWEVER, this digital age has done more to HELP my career than take away. I would not have gotten as far as I have without the internet.

Where can we connect with you online and discover more music?

You can connect with me thru all primary social media sites and apps. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Soundcloud, just type in “Justo Ontario” and im 100% sure my account will pop up

Anything else before we sign off?

Yes, Please be sure to go on Apple, Spotify, and/or Tidal to download my single “Dancin” and DJs? Spin – That – S#!T ! lol

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
