Interview with Jxxiii – In Mind

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman October 24, 2022 9:45 am Tagged With: Atlanta, Georgia, Hip Hop, R&B, singer, songwriter, United States

Jxxiii-In Mind

Jxxiii (pronounced J23) is a Nigerian-American rapper, songwriter and performing artist. The lyrical vocalist serves rhymes and smooth chill melodies. Her musical sound and style is described as 90’s boom-bap infused with melodic neo-soul. Her Nigerian background and worldly perspectives attracts global listeners.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Jxxiii about the latest release, musical memories, dream collabs and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

What’s something you’d like readers to know about your latest project?

“In Mind” is by singer/songwriter/lyricist: Jxxiii (J23) its funky, fresh and cool. It brings a conscious vibe to modern hip-hop and actually drops gems in the lyrics.

How does this project compare with your other release(s)? Was there anything specific you were trying to accomplish?

“In Mind” differs from my other records in a sense that the vibe hits you right when you press play. It’s catchy and you notice the potential upon first listen.

What motivates you to create music?

Music is my outlet and I love being able to tell my story and inspire others. Life experiences inspire me to create.

What’s one of your first or most powerful music memories? Did that play any role in driving you to create?

That’s a good question. I don’t feel I have reached that pinnacle just yet in my career. However, the response I received from “IN MIND” is something I will never forget. As an indie artist, this is confirmation that my records can go places and touch many souls.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

Probably Brandon Hines because I followed his career for so long in the early 2000s and believe he’s a new age Marvin Gaye. Check out his cover of Pretty Wings on YouTube.

What was the last song you listened to? And who is one of your favorite all-time bands/artists?

I was listening to Cruisin by D’Angelo and when I tell you Brandon Hines is an underrated R&B beast. Not many know of him. He has a voice anointed by the most high.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?

Most can connect with me on Twitter (@jxxiii_) and Instagram (@jxxiii).

I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?

I will keep releasing music and collaborating with musicians and producers. A lot of women in the industry have to pivot because ageism is a big issue but one of my goals is to shift that negative narrative implanted by society. My stage name is J23 stylized as Jxxiii in roman numerals. My last message to the world is Know yourself, know your worth, Do not settle for less. Do shadow work on yourself and heal from past trauma’s in order to be the greatest version of your self presently.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
