Interview with KIIRA – Last Time

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman November 28, 2017 1:17 pm Tagged With: alt-pop, indie pop, singer, songwriter

KIIRA-Last Time featuring Noah North

Born in Paris, raised in Zurich, KIIRA is a 20 year old Swiss-American songwriter and vocalist. Looking to dominate the space between future bass and alt-pop, KIIRA’s debut single “Last Time” proves she is clearly onto something. Co-written with Naomi Wild, songwriter and touring vocalist for Odesza, “Last Time” features KIIRA’s slick vocals and sly lyricism. KIIRA found her way to music through her love of art. Inspired by the likes of Basquiat, Lana Del Rey, and Nina Simone, KIIRA reminds herself not to be afraid to work outside of her comfort zone because that is where great art comes alive. KIIRA is done holding back and is ready to push boundaries in the electronic-pop space.

In this interview spotlight, we chat with KIIRA about the new single, vulnerability in music, her sound, influences and more.

Full Q&A along with links and a stream of Last Time featuring Noah North below.

Can we expect a visual for “Last Time” or is the focus more on releasing new singles right now?

Last Time was my debut single and I am currently working on more music. You can definitely expect visuals in the future!

Even though it’s an upbeat track, “Last Time” has some emotional lyrics. Do you find it difficult to put that vulnerability into your music?

I honestly believe that being vulnerable and letting it all out makes music so strong. I love being honest and showing who I am.

You and three-time Grammy winner and producer Justin Trugman have a very close music relationship. How did that develop into a bigger project than initially planned?

Justin and I were introduced through a mutual friend and we had the same vision. It instantly clicked from the first time I stepped into his studio. I absolutely love working with him. He has the kindest heart and is also crazy talented.

You’ve been described as “alt-pop”. Is this accurate in your opinion? How do you describe your sound? Do you have your mind set on a specific genre or do you want to explore other genres?

The more music I create, the more I can narrow it down to the exact genre. At the moment, the musical vibe I would like to portray is chill pop.

What’s the biggest takeaway you’ve gotten from creating this album? Have you learned anything valuable about yourself in the process?

Getting deeper in the music scene has allowed me to learn things about myself I never knew. Recently, I have been writing a lot in my free time, and experiencing so many things. I am just so excited to put more music out there and to express how I feel.

What did you grow up listening to? Have these artists influenced your style at all?

I grew up listening to music. I am constantly vibing to new music so I discover new artists all the time. I would have to say my biggest inspirations are Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones and Lana Del Rey.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
