Interview with Laila – Strangers at the Airport

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman May 18, 2023 9:57 pm Tagged With: Canada, electro-pop, indie pop, Pop, singer, songwriter

Laila-Strangers at the Airport

Laila‘s new solo release is a powerful reflection of her personal journey towards healing and self-discovery. “Strangers at the Airport” is a captivating indie electro pop track that showcases Laila’s heartfelt lyrics and velvety vocals. With the addition of a soulful saxophone, the song’s lush soundscape perfectly captures the moment of Laila’s emotional release as she finally finds clarity from her past relationship and surrenders to the healing power of closure.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Laila about the new single, challenges, AI, and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Congrats on the new release! What about “Strangers at the Airport” makes you most proud of it?

Thank you so much!! I’m very proud of this song. It feels very true to me, my vibe, and my current healing journey.

What does it mean to release your first song as a solo artist?

Ah it’s so exciting! Being a solo artist has been in a long time in the making for me. Up until now I’ve always leaned more into my passion for acting because I felt more comfortable playing other people… but I finally feel ready to play the role of ~me and really step into my own! I have a lot of unique stories to tell, and I hope they resonate with listeners.

What were some of the challenges you faced working as a solo artist? What was easier?

I used to be in a pop duo, and I really loved that. It was so magical having a person to bounce ideas off of and to create with.

Being solo now definitely has its challenges: at the end of the day, all the decisions I make and stories I tell belong to me alone. That’s powerful, but a little scary. I’m excited to now be in a place where I can truly & fully express myself (especially since I only really figured out who the heck I was over the last few years).

If you could fly anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I’ve always wanted to go to Paris.

The track has a country flavour to it. Is this a genre that you’ve been inspired by? Can we expect more of this?

Yes! I grew up listening to the Chicks and Johnny Cash with my family; my sisters and I would sing along in harmony during road trips. One of my favourite artists/inspirations right now is country-pop artist Ingrid Andress. I’m definitely making a conscious effort in my music to lean into the country genre in a way that feels natural to me and my sound. Listeners can definitely expect more of this with my upcoming singles.

What do you think about AI and its new presence in the music industry?

I know some artists are scared by the idea of AI taking over… but I’m not entirely worried (at this point). I think that songs written and performed by humans will always rise above.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?

I’m @helloitslaila on all social media and would love to connect there. My artist name (Spotify/Apple+) is “Laila”.

I appreciate your time. Want to say or plug any other projects before we part ways?

Thank you so much for having me, and for taking the time to listen to Strangers at the Airport! I have more singles coming down the pipeline, so be sure to follow me on your music service of choice.
