Interview with Lánre – LA

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 19, 2022 10:26 am Tagged With: Atlanta, Georgia, Pop, R&B, singer, songwriter, United States

Lanre

Atlanta artist Lánre returns with his brand-new single, “LA”. The fast-rising artist has been going from strength to strength since dropping his debut EP, In My Dreams, last year. “LA” arrives fresh on the heels of previous release “Somebody New (graymattr Remix)”, which was supported by BBC Radio, and with his audience continuing to grow with each release, “LA” looks set to be Lánre’s biggest single to date.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Lánre about the latest release, adapting during lock downs, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?

I’m from Atlanta, Ga and I make a mixture of R&B and pop music. In particular, I call it pop&b. I like to make songs about love and having a good time on weekends.

How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?

I’ve been singing and performing my whole life. Since the age of 7, I’ve performed in the church and have been performing in front of crowds since then.

How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?

My newest release, “LA”, is my most emotionally driven and personal song to date. With “LA”, in particular, I wanted to remind myself to stay grounded and humble no matter where life takes me. I’m so blessed to be at a place in my career that different opportunities are bringing me to big music industry hubs like LA and NYC. As grateful as I am to be living my lifelong dream of making music, there is way more to life than that. I think everybody has an “LA”, which can be a new job, new marriage, new house, etc. While it’s great to be starting a new chapter in your life, it’s important not to lose yourself in the process and to remember how you got there. This doesn’t mean you should be hung up on the past either. Use the lessons you’ve learned along the way to help guide you to your brighter future. In a nutshell that’s what I hope listeners will get out of the track after a few listens.

Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?

While I’ve been singing since I was a child, I started my professional career in 2020. As you probably know, this was a tough year for everyone but in so many ways music was my refuge. It was a great year to express my emotions and what I was feeling during that time. I feel like I gained a lot of fans because they could relate to how I was feeling during that time.

What was the last song you listened to?

I’m a huge fan of SZA and have been listening to her latest song, “I Hate U”, on repeat since it’s been out! She is one of my favorite artists and this song has related to me so personally lately. My listening to her has been resonating a lot through the music I’ve been writing and recording lately.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?

I’m a millennial so CDs are the golden standard of music for me. I remember walking my dog and having the Destiny’s Child “Survivor” album skip as I was walking him. Since that time, I’ve always imagined hearing myself on a CD, and I’m looking forward to sharing one of my projects one day!

Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?

I post a lot of behind-the-scenes videos on TikTok and YouTube. I love those platforms because I’m able to connect directly with my fans about my day-to-day life.

I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?

This is the first time I’m officially saying this, but my newest single, “No Bodies”, is releasing in February 2022! I’m so excited about it because it features a very talented singer from Atlanta, Reed. It’s a very funny and relatable story that we’re telling. That’s all I’m going to spill about that!

Another exclusive, I’ll be doing many shows in Atlanta, Denver, and LA starting in March 2022! I’m so excited to be on the road sharing new music with fans and connecting with them in person!
