Interview: Libby Ember

by Leslie Sherman February 9, 2026 4:32 pm Tagged With: songwriter

Following the September 2025 release of her debut EP I Kill Spiders and the subsequent single, “To Her,” Montreal singer-songwriter Libby Ember shares “Let Me Go,” a melancholic, dreamy indie-folk single that sits in the uncomfortable space between holding on and letting go. Nostalgic and emotionally raw, the track captures the quiet contradictions of a relationship that lingers long after both people know it isn’t right.

Inspired by a complicated relationship rooted in mutual fear, Libby reflects on the tension of staying when leaving feels just as painful. “I felt like someone was holding onto me because they were afraid of letting me go,” she explains. “Even still, I knew that it was wrong to keep dragging the relationship on when we knew it was wrong for the both of us. It also touches on the fact that the opposite feels wrong. Both letting go and not letting go feel wrong.”

  • What can you share with readers about your new project?

Let Me Go is about knowing that you’re better off letting go of someone who’s hurting you in the long run, but being heartbroken when you find out that they’ve already let go.

  • How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?

What’s different about this song is definitely the production. My dad and I recorded and produced this song completely at home. It’s also a lot more folky than my other songs so far, which kinda makes me feel like I’m sitting in a field on a farm watching the sunset. Essentially, what I mean by that description is that the instruments we used, like the flute, and the effects we used, like reversing vocals and putting them in the background, in production really pushed forward this mellow and slow feel of the song.

  • What about this single makes you most proud?

I’m proud of how far I’ve actually come since writing this song. I was in a much worse headspace when I wrote it, but by the time I was recording, I was able to give it a new meaning.

  • Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?

The goal I was trying to accomplish was the same as any other song I’ve put out until this point. I want people to be able to listen to my music and feel seen. I know that when I’m going through something difficult, I immediately just start making a playlist of songs that describe the same thing I’m going through, and eventually I start to feel less alone in it. I hope my songs can be that for people, too.

  • What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?

Firstly, music is what I love to do. It’s pretty plain and simple as that. I want to spend my life and make a living doing something that makes me happy and allows me to express myself creatively and emotionally. Similar to my last response, it’s also really important to me to build community and understanding within that community so others listening to my music going through similar troubles might feel less alone.

  • If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

It’s so hard for me to choose just one, but collaborating with Lizzy McAlpine is a dream of mine. I’ve told people so, so, so many times that she’s the reason I got into writing music and writing this kind of music specifically. She’s my biggest inspiration. All of this also goes for Phoebe Bridgers, who I can’t not mention.

  • What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?

The last song I listened to was Inside and Out by Feist. My favourite all-time artist is Phoebe Bridgers.

  • Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?

The best place to find me and stay connected is through Instagram. I’m very active and responsive to messages on there.

  • I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before we sign off?

Of course, and thank you as well! I hope to keep working through this musical journey, keep learning more about myself, and sharing more music with the world 🙂
