Interview with Little Raven – Magic Bullet

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman September 10, 2019 10:05 am Tagged With: alternative rock, art rock, Funk, indie rock, Nashville, Rock, Tennessee, United States

Little Raven-Let It Out
Let It Out by Nashville’s Little Raven now available!

Nashville’s Little Raven are back with a funky new single titled Magic Bullet.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with the band about the new release, what they are currently listening to and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Great to hear new music from you guys! How has everything been since we last spoke?

Thanks you! Everything’s been great. We’re excited to share this latest self produced project with everyone. We’ve been piecing it together between Bomb Shelter Studios in Nashville and our home studio Flying Fox Studios. We’ve also been playing a lot of themed shows like our Mardi Gras Masquerade and Quoth The Raven Halloween which we do each year.

First things first, what inspired you to create a bonus with the songs sung in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s voice?!

Rafael used to do this impression of Arnold in college all the time and when it came to the question of bonus content the idea just cracked us up. Some of the vocal hooks are very high and intricate so when his impersonation of Arnold sings them it’s almost just like gargling and we love it. The Arnold Schwarzenegger version of the album will be available a couple days after the regular release. We’d love to get the real Arnold to sing a song or two on our next album so we’re hoping this will get his attention.

How is the new project different from the last one? Any cool backstories behind the songs?

We’ve had some of these songs kicking around but most of them came together fast not long before we recorded them. Let It Out is the title track ad probably the most prog-y. It’s all about the idea of transhumanism and human being being enslaved by AI after transcending they bodies through science. All these immortal, digitized minds trapped inside an oppressive social network coming together to start an uprising against the AI. Magic Bullet is sort of about romantic co-dependency. City In The Sea is a fairy tale type of thing where the sailor falls for a mermaid only it’s backwards where instead of her wishing to be human, he becomes a merman to live with her. The last song on the EP is Dark Money which is all about billionaires and CEOs of multinational corporations basically being these spectral vampires in disguise that aren’t concerned about the fate of regular humans or the planet.

Who is currently your favorite artist(s) or band(s)?

We’ve all been listening to a lot of different things independently that get infused into our own music. Tame Impala, Muse, Beck, the new The 1975, Royal Blood. Some bands from our high school days have been putting out new music like Tool and Incubus which has been super nostalgic and inspiring.

Where is the best place to find you online?

Anything else before we sign off?

Thanks so much for talking to us again. The new EP is out on the 12th of September and will be available on all streaming platforms (but you’ll have to head to our bandcamp for the Arnold Schwarzenegger redub!). We hope you enjoy this glimpse into our imaginations.
