Interview with Love Stallion – Unforgettable Ride

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 31, 2019 11:39 am Tagged With: 80s rock, Colorado, indie rock, Rock, rock n roll, United States

Love Stallion

If you missed our recent article about Love Stallion’s latest single/video, find that feature here.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Love Stallion about challenges, technology, motivations and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

Love Stallion is from Denver, Colorado, and we write and perform glamorous hard rock. We have been heavily inspired by a lot of classic & sleaze rock, but also what Rolling Stones called Def Leppard once: “hard pop”.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

Love Stallion was originally inspired by a KISS / Def Leppard concert, where Crayton Huntly and I had front-row seats, and were completely blown away by the writing, playing, and production. The energy of a live performance is truly the best experience I have found on this planet.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

This is our first album, and we had originally planned to call the album “Big Rock Radio”, a capturing of the glory days of arena rock & roll from the 70s & 80s. We wanted to give our own original take on classic rock & roll, incorporating a variety of influences, both old & new. All the while bringing our very own lavish production and performance to the sound.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

I think the biggest challenge is to no longer view the world as “oversaturated”. I hear people quote failure stats all the time (like 9/10 businesses fail); however, they fail to qualify those businesses. Hard-working talent achieves & succeeds all the time, so my experience & reality is that technology has made it ever-so-simple for us to share Love Stallion with the world.

What was the last song you listened to?

“Personal Property” by Def Leppard.  The song structure, chord changes, solos, and layered vocals continue to blow me away.  I’ve been spinning the “Adrenalize” for the last few months, and I cannot. Stop.  While this album did well commercially, it seemed to be drowned out by the grunge takeover in the early 90s. Check it out!

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

I grew up on my dad’s vinyl as a very young kid, and have recently started building my up library. I absolutely love the texture and raw sound of it, and hope to press some Love Stallion vinyl soon too.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Spotify has an easy app with a huge selection. It’s simply the easiest and most cost-effective for me.
