Interview with Lovely World

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman October 27, 2020 9:13 am Tagged With: alternative rock, hard rock, indie rock, Rock, South Carolina, United States

Lovely World

Just like a satellite hurdling towards earth, Lovely World takes the pulse of our culture and mirrors it back to society.  Unrequited love, drug addiction, social afflictions and fearful political etiquette are some of the themes this rock hard four piece puts into orbit. Just as you try and label them strictly a hard rock band, a new wave of beautiful harmonies and romantic notions will lay you down with crying guitar leads, solid bottom end and passionate vocals.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Lovely World about the latest music, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

We’re a rock band from Sparkle City Spartanburg, SC!

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

When you’re in a town full of fast food restaurants and void of entertainment, you’re bound to find something to keep you busy. Thank god we found music. Five-six years ago we picked up instruments and started to learn how to play. After playing our first show in a dive bar, we knew we didn’t want to do anything else. Regardless of anything.

How is this new release different from previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

Don’t Lay Me Down is different from our previous songs in the regard that it doesn’t sound like anything we’ve released before. We weren’t really going for anything. Just pursuing the truth.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

I feel like most artists nowadays tend to make music with the idea of targeting Spotify playlist or joining the “collective sound” that’s been regurgitated for the past twenty years. The only challenge we face right now is that we don’t care to pigeon hole ourselves into a specific sound so it makes difficult for people to know what kind of band we are. Don’t get me wrong, you know it’s Lovely World when you hear one of our songs, but if you compare our track Compromise to this newest release Don’t Lay Me Down, you’ll see two different personalities.

What was the last song you listened to?

The last song we’ve had jamming in the van was probably Alice in Chains song Sludge Factory. That or Astral Weeks by Van Morrison.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Vinyl’s 100%. It’s warmer and feels more real but that’s just my opinion.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Honestly it’s probably Craigslists  or eBay. They have a pretty strong streaming service.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
