Interview with Mandi Macias – Ghost

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman June 7, 2022 12:53 pm Tagged With: alt-pop, Alternative, California, Los Angeles, Pop, pop rock, Rock, singer, songwriter, United States

Mandi Macias-Ghost

Mandi Macias, a multi-talented singer-songwriter was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She is an artist and musician that epitomizes the very essence of the modern era.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Mandi about the latest project (Ghost), adapting during the pandemic, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?

Hey there! First off, thank you for taking the time to interview me. My name is Mandi Macias, and I’m an independent artist based in Los Angeles. I would describe my music as out of the box, as I love genre bending and trying to incorporate unique new sounds. I lean more towards the alternative-pop genre and love to include live instruments in my production!

How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?

For as long as I could remember music was always my form of expression. I was always singing at the top of my lungs or banging on the piano as a child until my poor parents couldn’t take it anymore and finally decided to put me into music lessons. I really owe everything to my parents, especially my mama. They always encouraged and supported my passions, and without them I would not be the artist I am today.

How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?

I have definitely changed as an artist, considering that I first started releasing music when I was sixteen and now, I’ll be turning twenty. I’ve grown into a more mature sound and look when it comes to my projects, especially with my latest single “Ghost”. I released “Ghost” in October 2021 near Halloween, so when we were working on the visuals for the song, we wanted to go with something haunty yet seductive.

Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?

I think facing a global pandemic with mandatory stay at home orders was one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever faced as an artist. Not only was it difficult because I was unable to connect with my fans by playing live shows, but also felt creatively drained and uninspired. I truly am grateful that I was quarantined with my family because they motivated me every day to just keep creating. As well as reading a good book to get me out of my head and into another world for a minute! (PS I’m a huge book worm and love reading on my free time.)

What do you stand for?

I’m a firm believer in living your life authentically! I think in the era of social media it’s easy to get caught up in the latest beauty trends or the hottest new fad but being uniquely yourself and confident in that is what makes a person beautiful.

Despite how cheesy this sounds, the only person that can be you is you, and that’s so awesome! Not everyone will love your authentic self, but that’s okay!! I have learned you cannot please everyone. To just live life with kindness and originality.

What was the last song you listened to? Does that artist influence you in any way?

I actually have no idea what the last song I listened to was, so I just pulled out my Spotify and apparently it was “Liability” by Lorde (lol sad girl simp hours). Funny enough, all my OG fans who have been following me from the beginning know that I actually released a cover of this song on YouTube way back in the day. I absolutely love Lorde! I think she’s an amazing songwriter and has a beautiful voice. I definitely look up t her as a songstress!

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?

I’m a sucker for vinyl and I’m currently working on adding to my record collection. However, as an independent artist streaming platforms have been essential to reaching and connecting with new fans!

Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?

Here is quick link that will connect you to my Instagram, Youtube, Spotify, Apple Music, and website! I look forward to connecting with you all!!
