Interview with Metalhonic – The Unforeseen and Disconnected

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman September 15, 2021 10:52 am Tagged With: Asia, Central Asia, India, Metal

Metalhonic Records

Metalhonic is a Modern Metal Project From New Delhi, India Formed By Mohit Vig in 2015.

Metalhonic has released two albums. The first album “Origin” was self-released on 13th Feb 2020, and the second album “Amalgamate” was again self-released on 6th July 2020. The band has delivered their latest single, The Unforeseen and Disconnected, which we are highlighting.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Mohit and Rahul of Metalhonic about the new release, challenges during a worldwide lockdown and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?

We are a modern metal band from New Delhi, India. The band consists of Mohit Vig on Lead Vocals and Guitars and Rahul Rana on Drums. Metalhonic takes influence from various sub-genre of metal, like metalcore, groove metal, progressive metal etc. We don’t want to tag ourselves in any particular style because we switch things according to our mood, and we like to keep it that way. You can say that what we play is the Amalgamation of various different styles of Metal Music.

How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?

Mohit Vig : When I first heard the song “fade to black”  by Metallica it was over for me. I was totally blown away by the musicianship and the sheer energy in the playing. I had never heard a song with such energy and structure before in my life. The sound of the distorted guitars and the lyrics, and the message behind the words. It was that moment that I fell in love with Metallica and started listening to everything that I can find on the internet or the music store, Bands with similar style, everything that a fan does. That’s how I discovered this whole genre of Metal Music and this beautiful community of people known as Metalheads.

Rahul Rana : I am much more of a death metal guy. I picked the drum sticks after Watching Joey Jordison (my inspiration) drum video. For me, metal is that genre via which you can Express and touch the extreme of your emotions, feelings  and your thoughts. Not everyone can be happy isn’t it?

How did I get here?

It’s been a bumpy ride. I am not sure what made me play this kind of music, I think it is my journey of life which pulled me towards this music genre.

How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?

Mohit Vig : The upcoming album will continue the story from the second record “Amalgamate”, and musically it’s going to be very different but you’ll find everything that defines metalhonic, but this time more faster and more aggressive, more of everything that we can do at the moment, and lyrically too we are touching a lot of topics.

Rahul Rana : The latest project is gonna be more aggressive, full of energy. As for theme, there are different elements of human nature that we are covering in our latest project. From drums perspective, my role is to support the music in the best way I could.

Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?

Mohit Vig : I still remember when I was at the final stage of the first record “Origin” (The Debut Album) and I was planning on the next phase of releasing and supporting the album and then corona hit us all and everything got shut down within months. All my plans were of no use at that time. The only thing that came to my mind is to use that time rather than wasting it and I decided to write another record that will follow the first one story wise and this way I can keep myself busy and focus on music which brings me happiness. Keeping the creative process on is the best thing you can do in these kind of situations.

Rahul Rana : For me everything was challenging in terms of creativity. I usually do not used to focus on my things as I was caught in a rat race which has already been preoccupied. Then Corona came and everything came to halt. It was a trigger for me and I found it as a blessing in disguise. I know it was a tough time for the world but for me it was a gift.

Staying at home with the never ending time on my side, I kept practicing and without even realizing it, I started crossing my limits and my creativity . So, things made me do what I am doing right now and what I always wanted to do  otherwise I wont be doing the things if those things wouldn’t happen.

What was the last song you listened to?

Mohit Vig : Battery By Metallica

Rahul Rana : The Grudge by Tool ( big fan of Danny Carey)

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?

Mohit Vig : Now a days , I pretty much use Spotify and YouTube to find new music, So streaming platforms.

Rahul Rana : I use Spotify to stream all kind of music, then Bandcloud and Reverbnation for listening to underground music.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness.
