Interview with Nova Twins – Lose Your Head

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman July 31, 2018 8:49 am Tagged With: alternative rock, hard rock, London, Rock, United Kingdom

Nova Twins

South East London duo, Amy Love and Georgia South – aka Nova Twins – return with their ferocious new single Lose Your Head, out now via Flying Vinyl.

Propelled by frenzied hooks, snarling vocals and a tenacious energy, Lose Your Head is a fiercely attention-grabbing creation from the duo. Oozing an angst-driven force, it’s a raucous wall of sound that’ll hit you with its raw power on first listen. Of the track, the band expound:

Flipping punk rock on its head, Lose Your Head is a rejection of off the peg opinions, a rallying cry and a celebration of difference, an invitation to walk your own path. We want to open people’s minds and invite them to the wild side.”

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Nova Twins about the latest release, motivations, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Let’s dive a little deeper into you, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

Amy – There was no particular reason. It just happened naturally. We decided to write a song together a few years ago and our sound just kind of happened! The style of Georgia’s bass sound mixed with my vocals laid the foundation of the “Nova sound” We then added a drummer for live performances and studio and the rest is history!

How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?

Georgia – We’ve been releasing music for about 3 years now, we’re currently buried in the studio writing new tunes to release next year!

Who or what influences your playing and/or writing?

Amy – It literally can be anything! The concepts usually start with things that we have experienced but also we have songs about some of our favourite movies or old stories. Musically, we will change it up, Georgia is always experimenting with her pedals to create new sounds and it often starts like that but lately we are experimenting with other ways to start the song writing process, whether that’s starting with the drums first or writing a riff on a different instrument then transferring back on to ours. The prospects are endless!

Also what motivates you to keep going?

Georgia – When it’s something you love you never get tired of it, we can’t see ourselves doing anything else. There’s no plan B haha.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

No, we just write and if we think its any good we will put it in our live set lol! I guess we wanted something different for the recorded sound and we are really happy with the results. We worked with a great producer called Kevin Vanbergen on Lose Your Head and Hit Girl!

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CD’s? MP3s?

Georgia – Vinyl! The whole idea of how it works blows my mind. Love it.

How about this one… Do you prefer Spotify? Apple music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Amy – They all have their pros and cons – Bandcamp is cool as you can do a lot more on there but we there is so much out there now its just another thing to keep up!

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?

Amy – Annoyingly, it’s not enough for people just to like your page these days, the artist has to spend money on each post just to make sure everyone who liked it in the first place sees it. I think big media platforms take advantage of artists and people who use their platform in that way. You work hard in building your fanbase then to be told you have to pay to communicate with them properly… but saying that, it is important to have a platform where people can reach out to easily, so I guess you just have to suck it up!

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?

Georgia – We’re active on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at the moment, but we are loving Instagram the most so hit us up on there! You can listen to our music on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes etc. And watch our iPhone shot music vids on YouTube aha.

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

Georgia – Words of wisdom, hmmm… Never conform to something you’re not to try and fit in somewhere. Always be unapologetically you, be kind, be bold, shine bright!

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
