Interview with NYK – Overload

NYK Promo

In this interview spotlight, I chat with NYK about the new release, technology, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. In my music I like to talk about topics that go deeper than the surface. All of my music stems from real life situations that I’ve been through or seen others go through. I make music for the people that can relate to some real sh*t.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay on course?

I grew up classically trained and in the church. I think that allowed me to be more well rounded and naturally I just gravitated towards R&B. When I’d watch Usher or Michael Jackson perform on TV all I could think is “I wanna to do that.” I’d say what keeps me going is a genuine love for what I do. I can’t picture my life without music and I honestly don’t see myself doing anything else.

How is “Overload” different than your previous projects? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

“Overload” is definitely more of an upbeat track than my previous releases. I’ve always wanted to do a dance track so I felt like this was perfect because it still stayed true to my sound. It came very easy, I knew I liked the beat and I wanted to make something fun. I had no idea what I was going to write but I focused on the beat and had the entire song down in less than 15 minutes. Definitely one of my favorite songwriting experiences.

Do you face challenges as a musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

I’d say the biggest challenge is now that we’re in such a digital age the industry is super saturated. On the flip side, it has given us access to different producers and artists that we normally wouldn’t have access to. It also gives artists the opportunity to create their own brand and reach out to people worldwide.
