Interview with OffbeatKarma – What

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 28, 2022 9:23 am Tagged With: Asia, Central Asia, Hip Hop, India, rap

OffbeatKarma

In this interview spotlight, I chat with OffbeatKarma about the latest music, adapting during a pandemic, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and how do you describe your style of music?

I am a Keralite hailing from Mumbai. I was into beats since birth which soon turned into episodes of grooving spree! Dancing to any random beat that came on T.V. was my thing back then. I love Hip Hop and EDM to the bone since it works wonders on my brain. K- pop is my other all-time fad. Music brings my original self out of me, and I wanted to make it a part of my lifestyle.

How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?

I was trained in Carnatic Music for almost 5 years as a kid. I was happy with what I had but never satisfied. Finding out what I really wanted to do was a task by then. Pursuing Science during my college years just made me think more about music. Finally, I found my way out in 2016 when I heard ‘Blood, Sweat and Tears’ for the first time, a song track by BTS. My family was concerned hearing my decision of swapping into Arts stream after, yet in 2021, I got my degree in BMM. Things became clearer to me since then.

How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?

Till now, all the tracks that were released were tracks of the group called D Mafian. But the track which caught the eye of Songdew x IMD is my first single ever! I am a person who always strives to create variety with varied themes, flavors, and emotions, and who knows, maybe someday I’ll invent my own signature style!

Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?

I prepared on taking an adventurous path during my graduation years since I didn’t have any idea of what I really wanted to do in my future. I tried new things and gained experience from them. In the process, I stumbled upon rapping. Not stumble to be precise; one of my college buddies challenged me to perform a rap in my first year since he presumably thought my language stood out from the crowd! I still don’t know what made him do that. It sounded absurd, yet I took the chance. My life took a whole 360 turn from then.

What was the last song you listened to?

‘Heart upon my sleeve’ from ‘True’ album by Avicii

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?

As a kid, I grew up listening to my parent’s favorite Cassettes of renowned Indian singers. But now I listen to music either on mp3 or from streaming platforms. Times have changed so have the methods of doing things.

Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?

Follow me on Instagram @offbeatkarma and my YouTube channel OffbeatKarma to connect and know more about me. You can also find me on all music streaming platforms! Keep supporting, keep loving.

I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?

Thanks a lot, Songdew x IMD for giving me this amazing opportunity. My goal would have simply stayed nil without my audience’s sincere support. They made this fiction in my mind turn into reality. Thanks a lot, to everyone who has provided me with even the slightest amount of their support possible.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
