Interview with Our Fire – Hard To Breathe

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman December 13, 2018 5:00 am Tagged With: electro-pop, Florida, indie pop, singer, songwriter, United States

Our Fire

In this interview, I speak with Our Fire about the latest project, motivations, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

We’re based in South Florida but have roots to the Midwest and New Orleans. Our style of music is basically a mix of Singer-Songwriter (since everything we write starts with just guitar or piano), indie pop and electronic.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

We both have different paths! Nicole has been playing piano, drums, bass, and guitar since she was little and got to play a bunch of great shows growing up in Atlanta. Jake was more of a late bloomer, getting into music and songwriting in college where we met. It was just a lot of fun to perform in front of people. We’re very determined to make music at a high level for the rest of our lives, and getting to perform it in front of crowds that know the words to our songs or tell us how much it affects them, is the most amazing feeling. The best part is being able to work together!

How is “Hard To Breathe” different than previous releases you’ve been a part of? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

The difference with ‘Hard To Breathe’ is that literally everyone that hears it is affected by it in a different way. It’s just such a relatable message about anxiety and depression that people have really gravitated towards. Throughout the song, the lyrics basically paint a picture of how they view interpersonal relationships, always worried or thinking about pleasing someone else and letting that affect their mental state of mind. The main message is the YOU are the most important person, you have to take care of yourself and mental well-being before trying to please and help others.

Do you face challenges as a musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

There may be more challenges now than ever because every platform is so saturated. There are a lot of talented people out there, but also a lot of competition that makes it harder for managers and A&Rs to find the talent they are actually looking for. But on the other hand, it’s a lot easier to make a record these days. You don’t have to go to a fancy studio to make a song sound amazing, we literally make everything from a bedroom. Also, the access to distribute your music is so much greater with distribution companies like Stem and Soundcloud. The digital age also allows us to be creative with our look and our sound and helps us test out new ideas.

Where can we connect with you online and discover more music?

You can find us on Spotify and Apple Music under ‘Our Fire’ or on Instagram and Twitter at @ourfiremusic … also, we just updated our website www.ourfiremusic.com. We currently have an EP out as well and an awesome first single called “Savage.”

Anything else before we sign off?

We have multiple performances coming up so be sure to check out our upcoming show dates! Thanks a lot for this interview, we are so excited to be sharing our music with you guys!

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
