Interview with Perfect Blue – Guilty

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman February 27, 2020 10:25 am Tagged With: alternative rock, Chicago, electro rock, Illinois, indie rock, Rock, United States

Perfect Blue

In this interview spotlight, I chat with members of Perfect Blue about the newest music, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

Trish: Our band’s from Chicago! We make electronic-inspired rock music.

Blake: Trish said it just about as succinctly as you can! Trish and I draw from all over the musical map in our song-writing and production. From artists as far ranging as Charli XCX to someone like Rammstein or Smashing Pumpkins or even something like Mazzy Star or Beach House. It’s all very inspiring to us.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

Blake: I’ve been making music since I was about 13-14 in High School, some of my early bands were actually with Austin one of the guitarists in Perfect Blue so we go way back musically. I work as a Recording Engineer primarily, so music is a major part of my life path whether it’s my own creativity or helping other people record!

Trish: . I have always wanted to be in a band. Music in general has helped me in all aspects of my life. I’m a full-time biochemistry student – being able to make music with Perfect Blue gives me an artistic avenue outside of science and allows me to fully embrace my creativity.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

Blake: Our new record is the first full length record we’ve made with Trish and when she came on board, the project really took its full form. We were able to write an album immensely fast as music just started pouring out of the band and we’ve been chasing it ever since! The new music has definitely taken on a life of its own, and has a growing intensity, not just musically but creatively as well.

Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?

Trish: We use a lot of production and electronic elements in our songs, so I’d say technology is more of a boon in our music-making process. I think the Logic files for a lot of our songs have 50+ tracks each, which wouldn’t be possible without the advent of modern software.

Blake: Like Trish said, Logic Pro plays a big part in the identity of Perfect Blue. Not only is it the DAW that we use at the studio we record out of as a band, but both Trish and I use the program heavily in our song-writing and production process as it allows us to literally send the song project files back and forth to each other seamlessly and allows us to collaborate in a way that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
