Interview with Preston – Sky Fly

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman November 1, 2018 10:08 am Tagged With: Canada, Hip Hop, rap, Toronto

Preston

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Preston about his latest release, challenges, motivations and more.

Full Q&A along with links and the music video for Sky Fly below.

Where are you from and what style music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I am from downtown Toronto, Canada although I have dual citizenship in Canada and U.S. I create rap music with hopefully a broad appeal.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

I’ve been interested in rap music for as long as I can remember. I first started listening to Big Sean and Eminem. I loved the music so much and the messages they were communicating. It made me think I could possibly do it too. Without music or art I think there would be so much more racism and our culture would suffer. Sometimes I find it hard to articulate to someone my thoughts or feelings but doing it through my music just comes naturally. It’s Sky Fly, it’s about chasing my dream.

How is “Sky Fly” different than previous releases? Did you set out to accomplish anything specifically?

I started creating music around four years ago, I’m 14 now. Sky Fly is me maturing as an artist. It just really shows a progression of me musically. The music just flows. I don’t necessarily know where it comes from but I really just want to connect with people and have them appreciate it. I’ve been in sort of an “aspirational” mood lately so I guess it has a bit of that in it too.

Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

I wouldn’t call myself an “indie musician”, I’m a musician. Technology has helped me in so many ways. From inspiring me, to helping me create, writing, producing, connecting with other musicians and of course reaching way more people with my music than I would have otherwise.

Where can we connect with you online and discover more music?
