Danish artist Rebecca L. Armstong, aka Rebecca Lou, is now ready to blast into your eardrums with her riotous debut single Bitch U Look Good!, now available via We Are Suburban.

A tribute to your own hotness and loving your body, Bitch U Look Good! is an empowering anthem in the face of all the prescriptive body ideals we are faced with everyday. Propelled by raging riffs and the soaring power of Armstong’s gritty vocals, it immediately hits you with its thrashing intensity and electrifying, Riot Grrrl-inspired, energy, resulting in a delightfully raucous slice of punk-rock.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Rebecca about the new project, motivations, challenges and more.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

Younger, I really identified with artists that stood out, not afraid of being ugly and raw and I was listening to a lot of punk rock music. I was often told that I was too loud or too much, and I just kinda learned to embrace being that, and rock music is the perfect outlet for that intense outspoken vibe. It resonates very clearly with me and who I am as both a person and musician.

What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public? 

I started singing when I was about 11 years old and aiming more professionally towards a career in music when I was about 16 years old, trying out alot of different stuff musically. Rock music just kinda was the only thing that stuck and what I identify with creatively. My drive is the love and passion for speaking up about issues that matter to me, like love, feminism and being a young woman learning about life for better and worse. I kinda always was an outsider growing up, and I just hope all the other misfits out there find some power in their differences, too. My musical journey is where I’m a hundred percent myself, don’t know who I’d be without it really.

Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?

It’s funny, because I’ve really been going back to my musical roots lately with bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sex Pistols, The Distillers and grungy stuff like L7 and Alice in Chains etc. I’ve been living my musical teens again and really enjoying it. L7 just released a new single last week, check it out

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

This project is about so much more this time around. Its about being myself 100% and being self confident in my work as an artist, without compromise. I’ve been active in other bands prior, but not like this. No calculating marketing plans or radio plug strategies. This is my who I am, raw and without filter. I feels really good !

What was the last song you listened to?

I’m listening to the UK based pop-punk band,The Big Moon, as we speak and drinking coffee. Just found the band online and really like it. I recommend checking them out ! very cool

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Definitely vinyl. I’d love the gritty scratchy sounds when you play a vinyl  and the whole aesthetic surrounding it. Every vinyl is an artwork and I love exploring small details in the cover art. I use my fave vinyls as decorations in my home, love to look at them.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

I must confess I use Spotify a lot on the go, cos’ its really easy. But I strive to buy my all of my friends releases on Itunes or support them with donations on bandcamp and also use Soundcloud to discover new underground stuff.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?

Its a jungle out there discovering new music, but the access to the more edgy underground stuff has become so much easier, so thats really cool. I guess the big void of social media is easy to drown in, but never the less also gives me the oppurtunity to connect with fans outside Denmark and reach a bigger audience.
