Interview with Rohan

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman February 26, 2020 8:37 am Tagged With: Australia, singer, songwriter, urban

Rohan

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Rohan about his music, motivations, challenges and more.

Full Q&A below. Be sure to follow Rohan on Instagram for the latest and greatest.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I am from the land down under… Sydney, Australia. I consider myself to be an urban artist. I don’t like to restrict myself to a particular genre but I like to create music with meaning and music with feeling.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

For as long as I can remember this is all I have ever known. Music is what gives me purpose every day. It is what motivates me to wake up. Knowing I have the ability to make a difference and make as many people happy through my outlet is my main motivation.  An individual’s happiness is one of the most important things and having the ability to influence that is priceless.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

This my debut EP. I traveled to LA, redefined my sound, changed my artist name and worked on my branding. This is me at its core. I have met some amazing people in the industry who have humbled me and allowed me to learn of them. Which I am grateful for. Now I have 5 songs all different in energy but all super special. These 5 Songs are an entre’, main and dessert all packaged in one project. The only thing I wanted to accomplish with this project is that people listen to my music and enjoy it.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Probably being patient, I think that is super underrated as a musician. Especially now with the availability of information so easily people just want to let things go straight away. However there is a process to it and once you step out of the studio, you need to make sure you have all your tools ready to make sure you give yourself the best chance. Someone once told me that there’s no point in having fire music if no one listens to it and it makes sense, so being patient is something I have definitely had to learn cause trust me I am the opposite. I want things now.

What was the last song you listened to?

I actually have had Jay Z’’s Blueprint on repeat today. Felt like an old school vibe when I woke up, so the last track I was listening to was ‘Song Cry’ one of my favs of all time.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

They are all different. CD’s take me back to my childhood and long road trips in the car. The sound and feel of a vinyl elevate the musical experience. It becomes a whole feel. In saying that MP3’s have changed the industry, it makes music available to everyone breaks down barriers and its quick and easy to access. As a preference MP3’s just cause of the ease.

How about this one… Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

I am an Apple person, I love the convenience of it. All my products are essentially Apple and I jumped on Apple Music when it initially came out and still have it now. However in saying that I also do have Spotify (yes for some reason pay for both). As an artist, I think I prefer Spotify, the access to real-time statistics and also curated playlists. It makes it much easier to be discovered on Spotify. So as an artist  I prefer Spotify as a consumer I prefer Apple Music. (Half and Half )

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

Follow me on the gram @theboyrohan I will be releasing my debut EP ‘ 2 Weeks in the Valley’ very shortly so make sure you follow me on the gram to keep up to date with my latest work.

Anything else before we sign off?

Peace, love and good vibes. Thanks for the interview
