Scarlett Macfarlane returns with “Immortal,” a powerful and defiant pop-rock single built around themes of resilience, self-worth, and inner strength. Written as an empowering anthem, the song embraces the idea that while life’s challenges may knock us down, something essential within us remains unbreakable.
“I wanted to write a song that made you feel empowered and inspired,” Scarlett explains. “A song that made you want to put a fist in the air. A song that reminded you of your own strength and fortitude.” For Scarlett, immortality isn’t about living forever in a literal sense, but about the endurance of identity and creation. The idea that what we make and who we are continues long after moments of struggle pass. “Our essence is ultimately unkillable,” she says. “We have this crazy inner fortitude to come back swinging.”
What can you share with readers about your new project?
I’m on a journey of releasing 15 songs one-at-a-time right now, but “Immortal”, for me, has been the song filled with the MOST anticipation. I wrote this song to feel BIG, larger than life, made for a stadium. I’m so proud it’s now out for the world to hear.
How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
Each of my songs has been so different, so it’s hard to compare. This one feels like “more” somehow. If I’m being honest, this song would’ve been my first single ever released, but I saved it in hopes of building up a little before this one. I wanted this one to come as a “whoa” moment, so I held it back. There’s still more big moments to come, but something about releasing this song feels like a real goal-accomplished for me.
What about this single makes you most proud?
That I wrote it and it’s SO me. I didn’t shy away from writing something that felt big and brave and empowered. I pulled no punches.
Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
I call this one my “Marvel Movie Song”. They say dream big, so… I want someday for this song to be featured in a big action movie or sports event or something. That would be INCREDIBLE.
What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
I create music because I can and all these ideas are floating around inside me, and I like the music I create enough to think it’s worthy of others needing to hear it (not at all biased). Plenty of songs (hundreds, really) didn’t make the cut, but these ones did for a reason. I write my songs from a place of inner truth that I want to share with the world. I’m motivated to keep going when my own songs still give me chills—when I hear them back and I’m like “wait, this is really good.” When it gets hard (and it does get VERY hard sometimes), I’m also motivated by friends and family who tell me this adventure, no matter how hard, is worth it.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why?
This is hard, but for this song’s vibe I’ll choose Freddie Mercury/Queen.
What was the last song you listened to?
A new artist I found recently through Instagram released a new song today called “Pushing Forty”, and it’s so much fun! https://tr.ee/aRmf-CkLNU
