Interview with SEYD – Another World

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman October 5, 2017 1:33 pm Tagged With: alt-pop, Alternative, indie pop, singer, songwriter

SEYD

SEYD returns with her latest ethereal, alt-pop single Another World, out now via Born Good.

Another World is about the loss of a partner, written from the perspective of both the dead and the living. This brooding theme combined with the track’s ghostly beats, chilling analogue keys and warm atmospherics creates dark-pop for a contemporary audience. Eleanor Robinson’s vocal soars at the forefront of this arrangement, sounding akin to the likes of BANKS and Broods’ smooth, celestial vocal style.

In this interview spotlight, we speak with SEYD about influences, challenges, the new project and much more.

Full Q&A along with links and the video for Another World below.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

I’ve always loved pop music, so it was natural for me to (try to) write catchy and immediate material. I believe that my music has a contemporary sound, but it’s dreamy and ethereal tone adds something a bit different from the norm.

What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?

I’ve sang all of my life and have always wanted to build a career in music in one form or another. Having people listen to my own songs was perhaps a touch daunting at first, but it is something that I have always wanted to do.

Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?

My family are very musical, so they have probably influenced me the most. My taste in music has definitely changed over the years. When I was younger I listened to a lot of folk and singer/songwriter type stuff. At present, I’m more into R & B or soul tinged electronic music.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project Creatively or otherwise?

Not necessarily. I had a clear idea of how I wanted my material to sound, but I didn’t want to place any restrictions on myself either. Essentially, I just want to create honest, emotive and dynamic music.

What was the last song you listened to?

“Blue Train Lines” by Mount Kimbie (featuring King Krule).

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Vinyl. It looks and sounds better.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

I’ve been loving apple music lately, but I don’t really have a preference. I stream and buy music from many different services/sources.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?

The biggest challenge I guess is keeping the momentum going. If you’re not posting something everyday, whether its music or something visual, your audience might lose interest or they could just forget about you. It’s integral to maintain a presence.

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more music?

Soundcloud. But my material is easily found on Spotify and Apple Music too!
